Looking for answers from those more schooled than I
by sassafrass inok, although though i was raised in the jw belief system the entirety of my childhood my parents were jack-jehovahs witnesses if you will and i was never fully immersed in the whole system.
we went when felt like it, i was allowed to fall asleep during meetings, we never went door to door, i was never baptised and so on.
sooo i never had a real solid understanding of the reasons behind why we believed certain things.

anyone ever heard of THE RIVER church?
by what_Truth? inevery week these guys come to my door, hand me a couple loaves of homemade looking bread and a bag of beef jerky, then they invite me to a church service held in a community center with the promise of pizza and coffee.
i know that many churches do outreach work, but this goes above and beyond anything i've ever heard of before; especially since these guys look like they could use the food a lot more than i can.
natrually i'm intriged.

Maybe it's some strange farm produce cult or something.. I'd go for the food anyways

I debated with my "devout" JW mom and her JW elders for 5 hours
by booker-t inas most of you know by now i have told you that my mom has been a "devout" jw for over 40 years and i can't get her to budge.
well the last time we debated she left me totally confused and in a daze.
i did some fast research and this past sunday we had a free-for-all debate that lasted 5 hours.

:Would it be wrong if afterwards the nurse told all of her friends that she acted as a doctor to deliver the baby? Or would it be wrong if the nurse later said she was a doctor? The elder asked me is there a difference here? I told him that is a good analogy.
I really wish you hadn't fallen for this pre-packaged crappy analogy dude. If you give them an inch they'll take a mile (ie. calling you the 'evil slave'). But really in the end, who cares? If they want to rationalize their lives away they are gonna do it anyways.. sad about your mom, but its her life.

God's intervention or.....an apostates?
by toladest ini was reading the post about god's intervention on the last page.
( started a new one to be on current page) anyway, the question was wether or not god intervines in peoples lives.
i have never believed that he does in our time.

This is the beef that I have with Christians in general. I remember a story that was going around for a while when I was a witness that God made lights flicker at a memorial because the memorial talk giver turned out to be an 'apostate'. When an MS friend of mine slipped off a cliff and died a few years ago it was all 'time and unforseen occurance' affecting us. Try telling his parents that God flickered lights at a memorial. Its all just a pile of shit IMO.. if there is a God out there and he cares I think he most definetly has a hands off approach.

Funniest comment in a topic!

i was just re-reading a thread and saw this line-it makes you realise that some jws would fail a test to become the village idiot.. it made me laugh my butt off, again (same as the first time i guess!
) so i was wondering what other great lines have stuck in peoples minds!

How many of you were nervous?
by Confusedgirl inif you are taught the jw organization is your link to god, it is so hard to think of leaving everything.
like a hole that will not be filled again, there is so horrible things that have happened in the world, could it be that there is no everlasting life for us, so many questions and to think of giving up everyone makes me sick to my stomach.
but i want to be happy and i'm not, does anyone feel empty?
-

I really know how you are feeling.. I felt that way only about half a year ago or so. When you leave the org. entirely, things start making a lot more sense.. you realize that the world isnt as black and white as they would have you believe. Stick around here and keep asking questions, form your own belifes based on evidence. You'll have to do a lot of reading and research and soul searching, but it really is worth it.

If there is an increase then Jehovah is 'speeding things along in his due time'. If things are dropping off like they are, all of a sudden its ' the love of the greater number' 'cooling off'. They have all there mis-quotes all nicely arranged to keep everyone locked in.

Man I wish I could quote this word for word but I can't find it right now.. anyways it was someone replying to a JW and they said something to the effect to 'try asking an elder the tough questions regarding the society's chronology, not the 'is it okay for me to leave my lunchbox in an aisle at the assembly?' type questions and see what answer you get.'
Effin cracked me up
