Are Believers Truly Humble?
by serotonin_wraith inif you are non religious, do you still feel those with religion show a higher level of humility than others in society?.
on the face of it, i feel most would answer in the affirmative.. but breaking it down, i find it harder and harder to accept.
in fact, i'd call it the opposite of humility.

Be honest. Would having more money make you happier?
by nicolaou init's not that simple of course but i would certainly appreciate the freedom and time that cash in the bank would give me.
.
how about you?.

Absolutely!
It's simple--being in debt makes me unhappy.

As A Former JW, Do You Feel You Should "Apologize" For Past Actions?
by minimus indo you believe that you should now apologize for whatever actions you made when you were a witness?.
do you think that if you were an elder that you should contact those that might've felt oppressed by you and your "theocratic" actions?.
if you were a zealous preacher, do you now feel you should go back to your former bible students and tell them the error of your ways?.

Yes, my friends have been given apologies and some family are still due. I am sorry for purposely not having a presence in their life nor allowing more than a miniscule one in mine because none of them were jw's (they were against them).

Renegade Mormons - Abuse of Children- Broken Bones -Many Girls Pregnant
by flipper inhow long will religions claiming to worship god - tolerate the abuse of children , and try to hide it ?
catholics, jehovah's witnesses, mormons - my wife and i discussed it and i'm starting to feel that there is something about the stunted views of religions about sex in general that creates these monsters of sexual child abuse !
do we not just hear about the non-religious child abusers ?

I feel the same way you do. Neglect and abuse hide behind religion and there is NO excuse for it. Someone has to protect the children when adults give them up for older men to play with sexually. Yes, parental cards need to be revoked at that point.
If god is so great, then he'll protect the children when they're off the compound and the wackjob mothers shouldn't have anything to worry about.
As for the broken bones--that made me feel even more anger at the fact that these people (non cult ppl, too, really) just reproduce and then don't give a fug about another person's life who cannot take care of themself. My broken arm from 2 1/2 months ago is still messed up!
Religion free is the way to be.

Yes, for what was said and a few times for what was not said. These have all been done by family.
The only thing that may 'crush' you is a combination of hurtful words and low self-esteem. In this case, half the problem is with us. Why should peoples words have such a drastic effect on our emotions, they are after all just people with the same frailities as ourselves.
I see it as a combination of hurtful words specific to the situation. That combined with the vulnerability of self to the given situation, and how that situation affects that person's life going forward. It's only low self-esteem if that second person (people) truly have no impact on the situation itself.

Do Parents Have the Right to Force Religion on Their Kids?
by maxwell inat the washingtonpost.com, one of the regular blogs is called "on balance".
often the topic is the balance between work and home life.
however, today the topic title was "do parents have the right to force religion on their kids?".

Why don't we expose our children to multiple religions without picking one, and them let them decide for themselves as adults -- as we do with most important decisions, such as careers, spouses and where to live?
I'm actually taking it further and doing my kids some good by NOT exposing them to religion or god. Of course, being the only atheist around them for 100 miles, they are exposed to both by family members and their beliefs. I am raising them to think and question religion, god and me.
Is it force when you are simply teaching your child what you believe?
For me, yes. I believe they'll have more respect for themselves if they keep a clean room. I don't believe the supernatural and/or religions will make them a better person as I think their choices and true feelings in life as they mature will be there regardless if the extras are involved or not.
I'm drugged and sleepy so I hope this is clear!

what is there to find "beyond" reason? (inspired by BurnTheShips)
by inkling ini was struck by the honesty of a recent comment by burntheships,.
but i didn't want to hijack the thread.... [w]e see a lot of threads where atheists try to disprove that god exists.
atheism is a universal negative, how can one know for a certainty that something does not exist without infinite knowledge?

Nature is "creative and intelligent" in its own right.
If so, what is the evidence? HTML was undeniably created by an intelligent agent, and it does not self assemble into something meaningful yet nature was not and it can?
BTS
One would need to believe what is in science text books and then can learn the answers.
Yes, nature can self assemble into something meaningful, something real, even though it was not created by some being. Lives of animals and people prove that to us everyday.
