Random thoughts on the Jubilee in the UK
by ballistic insaluting the flag was something not encountered very often here in the 1970s uk, in fact that kind of nationalism or patriotism was something i'd been warned about as a young boy, being brought up in the jehovah's witnesses from age 4, through meetings and the publications.
at some point, i don't know when, i decided it was more american, whether rightly or wrongly.. but even so, there was a large black and white photo of our entire school in panoramic format right outside my classroom on the wall saluting the flag, and i think this was the 1977 25 year jubilee of queen elizabeth ii.. now as a young person attending a fairly religious school in the 1970's, you were used to "making a stand" for things, letter in hand first day in a new class, and being ushered into one room or another to avoid religious assemblies and other xmas, and other seasonal celebrations.. one day the teachers, in their abundant wisdom, stood myself and a younger witness in the corridor right outside the assembly hall where the children would filter past.
every second or third child that filtered past would ask, "why are you standing there?

this item just featured on the bbc lunchtime news today as the headline story and the piece included a reporter who singled out jehovah's witnesses for discussion from the 30 organisations covered by the report.
the news item then went on to feature an extensive interview ex elder and ex jehovah's witness writer lloyd evans..

Thinking about thinking and upbringing
by ballistic ini was thinking about being "brought up in the truth" as opposed to joining.. as a child's brain develops, it builds connections based on what it is taught.
these connections are inseparable from the person in that our thoughts and memories actually become part of our personality (who we are).. a very simple example, might be being taught *not to do something* because it "displeases jehovah".
the understanding of right and wrong is then set in the child's mind and built upon.. there are several points of thought i have about this fact.

Heart vs Mind - What Makes Us Human
by ballistic inhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01kpvj1/heart_vs_mind_what_makes_us_human/.
i was watching this bbc iplayer programme on heart and mind, (which is well worth a watch if you can access where you are).
and despite how the programme starts out, it develops into a deep and touching discussion of what makes us human.. i personally was left with the feeling at odds with what i believed as a witness.

A month to go until 2014
by ballistic ina month to go until 2014. .
it's quite a big year (2014) for ex-jws.
you can tell because if you search for 2014 on the forum, the significance of it being 100 years since 1914 has not been lost on ex-jws some of whom pointed out the proximity of it, around 10 years ago.

Hubble deep field photograph
by ballistic ini have always found the hubble deep field photograph, apparently hubbles most important photograph, very interesting.. for those of you who don't know, it's a long exposure or series of long exposures taken over many months of an otherwise completely empty and black region of space.. i was reading some info on it from the uk physicist brian cox, and he explains another dimension to it.. when you look at the deep field photograph, you are seeing a true 3d picture.
each galaxy in the picture are vast distances apart.
some relatively near, some almost the entire edge of the galaxy away.

The Brain, Quantum Mechanics and Reality
by ballistic ini was watching a tv programme the other day about experimental surgery was being used to put silicon chips into a blind man's retina, and how he said that an amazing side effect was vivid dreams in full colour at night.. and i got thinking how sometimes when i awake i can almost here the noise around me "modulate" from the sounds in my dream, actually vice versa.
the brain acts as a kind of device which can take white noise and modulate some kind of order out of it.. the world around us is, as we know, operating on a quantum level, and the brain seems like the ideal device to make sense of it, in wakefullness that is.. the two slit experiment shows that the quantum waveform collapses to a certain state when it is observed.
perhaps it is the brain itself internal to "us" that collapses the waveform inside the brain and not externally.

this world is a reflection of you
by ballistic ini was recently on holiday aka "vacation" on a beautiful island, and turned a corner on a cliff top to see a wall with graffitti on it (ironically), "this world is a reflection of you - take care what you do with it.
" or words to that effect.
so i got thinking it's about dropping litter and stuff.

Loosing Your Religion
by ballistic inchanging your religion for another or completely loosing your religion and or your belief in god, or turning to an agnostic point of view is really quite a big change.
for not wanting to state the obvious, when you change your religion, it changes not just the concept of religion in your mind, but your entire world view, or the way you perceive things work in the universe.
how does such an enormous change happen?.
