Thank goodness the bullets fired into his body didn't detonate all those explosives he was carrying.

That could be why they shot him...to keep him from detonating a device. I'm not a bomb expert but I would think that a crude homemade bomb would need some kind of detonation device to make it explode. Without it, it's just bomb material. But like I said I'm not an expert.

Another passenger on the train, Anthony Larkin, told BBC News the man appeared to be wearing a "bomb belt with wires coming out".

    (From BBC website)

Possibly what he was wearing under his 'unseasonal' clothing? Even if the police thought he did pose a serious risk for whatever reason, I think to be shot 5 times at close range is excessive - still, it was thoughtful of them to call the air ambulance just in case he survived eh? What's the old saying? - With hindsight perhaps things could have been handled better.

Its not a good situation to be in. I guess everyone including the police are more jumpy at the moment and hence less prepared to take chances.

Well I think we have the relevant facts...what circumstances would allow you to 'condemn the police'.....are there any? ISP Unadulterated horseshit- how do you know he was not wearing a heavy overcoat with explosives strapped to his body and was reaching into his pocket to put two wires together to detonate himslef - if I was there I would shoot first, verify he was completely no more harm and then ask questions later -it is easy for armchair critics who were not there

Well if there had been some bombs in my school that had killed over 50 people, and I was an armed teacher (LOL), and a kid came into my class on a hot day with a big fat overcoat on, and when I confronted him he ran like hell down the school corridor - who knows what I would do!!

    What would you do?

Its so easy to criticise people who are in the middle of the situation. Naturally we would made all the right decisions, compared to those dumb assholes that did all the wrong things in the real event.

    SO ISP, here's the deal.

You are an armed special unit police officer. You are part of a team that has a location under surveillance in connection with the Thursday bombings. You and your team notice a guy from the address exit a head toward in tube station wearing a heavy coat on a hot summer day.

As this guy enters the station you tell him to stop, that you are the police. He sees you and the other officers and makes a run for it. He jumps the barriers and runs. You chase after him, telling him to stop but he heads down onto a platform and into a carriage. You run in the carriage telling everyone to get out.

The guy has grabbed a passenger. You chase after him and he tries to run again, trips, and you jump on him.

After all the effort, you decide that it would be better to unload your gun five times into him rather than take him in for questioning.

    Great logic!

    steve
