The minute you make it personal by bringing up the subject of my family, rationality and objectivity are lost. It's easy to make personal and emotive statements - just like the tabloids who constantly scaremonger and strive to incite people's emotions. However, I believe that this board is a forum for intelligent, rational discussion which attempts to bypass the merely sensational and usually succeeds. Your argument became seriously weakened the moment you made it into a personal and hypothetical issue.

Well, I think the shoot'em first idea is a bit far-fetched...but if the police yell, "Stop!" you better damn well stop. Anytime you run from the law, for whatever reason, you have to accept the consequences for your actions.
I don't buy the new speculation that the cops didn't identify themselves. It just doesn't add up for some reason.
But, none of us were there, we don't know all the facts. It's easy to second guess from where we are all sitting. Being a cop is tough, they have to make instant life/death decisions much like a soldier makes in certain extreme circumstances. Sometimes they make the wrong decision.

This may sound silly, but can't a tranquilizer gun be used? There are certain drugs that can cause immediate paralysis, if not almost immediate. Evidently the person was being held down right before getting shot, could therefore a person be shot with something to paralyze them rather than kill them, or use some other means to make them unconscious?

I guess a Tazer could be used...but what kind of message does that send to potential terrorists? Go ahead, try to blow us up...we'll stun you or put you to sleep? Or if you're a little more cynical, what kind of message does it send to your own people? The decision to shoot to kill, may be more for the masses than the perps. The perps'll kill themselves anyway with suicide bombs. Thing is, the people want to feel safe...if that means popping a cap in someone's ass that runs from the cops, so be it.
