Eschatology, gotta love it.  It always seems to me that it is less about "prophecy" and "serving God" and more of a coping mechanism for the day-to-day problems people encounter in real life.  It seems to comfort people who can't deal with their anger at big and small injustices.  "You put too much sugar in my coffee.  Ha, ha... Someday you will pay for that at 'Armageddon'.  See who laughs last...That'll show you."

Eschatology smacks to me like destruction porn for the impotent and insecure.

I think that people who are so sure of "the end" being around the next corner- be they JW's or those waiting on Daniel's 70th week, the second coming of Christ, or the rapture- are just like gamblers that think the next roll of the dice will be the big winner.  When Israel makes peace with Palestine or Obama leaves office, they just double down on the very next roll of the dice.

End of the world is not just a scriptural imagination, it is now the talk and concern of the informed community

    The ultimate supernatural revenge fantasy.

Vidiot - "The ultimate supernatural revenge fantasy."

    Nicely put.

On a side note, there are some very interesting articles/papers on the psychology of eschatology, end-of-world, etc.  Some point to the idea that we might all be wired to have a bit of a "revenge fantasy" mentality as part of our psychological immune system.  This could explain the success of movies/tv-shows/games/books that have some sort of "end-of-the-world" theme to them.  Gotta love "The Walking Dead" ;-)

The ultimate supernatural revenge fantasy - maybe so. Perhaps it's also a way to get people to accept their lot in life. If anything bad happens to them, they don't really need to sort it out - God will do that at Armaggedon.

There were petty wars between 1945 and 2011, but they were not powerful enough to endanger the general peace of that 57 years. In 2001, it's the Sole Super Power (or World's Police) that was attacked! This changed the history forever. Thus 2001 was comparable to the year 1914.
