The Hebrew Scriptures has a lot to recommend it in terms of human interactions. You can find justifications for almost any despicable act or programme, including for genocide. If you have to turn to those Scriptures for guidelines onbehaviour in the 21st Century, the more you are signalling you are a cult.

The more they sharpen the rhetoric around shunning, the more they are tacitly acknowledging that there are reports of many active Witnesses who routinely ignore the instructions - but don't make a big deal out of it.

Exactly what I see happening here where I am.

In Leviticus, God struck them dead-it wasn't their dad or anyone else who took it upon themselves to report it or be judge or jury. So MAYBE what some JW could comment on was that if God strikes down any of our (DF'd? Those guys were struck down while in good standing but had apparently done a wrong towards God) friends or relatives in a supernatural way, then we certainly should take that example and not mourn them. Because if you are seriously taking the Bible at face value, that is the face of it.

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. (Richard Dawkins)

In the past I thought the above words were blasphemous, but now I know they are actualy true. Note how the Watchtower Society justifies its hard line by using the Old Testament.

You have to pity all the millions of poor ignorant fools who actually believe those verses in Leviticus were a real historical event. It shows how immature the human race is that so many still believe such ancient, superstitious, desert-dwelling nomadic 'holy scripture' actually happened.

Hello!! It's clearly pure fiction, scary stories to keep all the ancient Israelites in fear and submission to the lying Jewish Priests who presided over them. And the Governing Body today employs the same lying priestcraft to keep all their Watchtowerite minions in loyal fearful submission to their nasty anti-family creeds.

But if JW's want to believe in a fire breathing dragon called YHWH then "stupid is as stupid believes".

Picture of Jehovah destroying the rebels who disobediently burned incense to him:

If a parent of a convicted murderer, who is condemed by the law and receives their death sentence could mourn, and God accepts that, why in God's name sake can't we mourn our DF'd child's death? Because some ancient priest's sons were put to death? Didn't Jesus parable about the Prodical son teach us something?
