Why Isn't the USA the Safest Country in the World With All the Guns

Most American voters find it acceptable to keep voting for a huge military buildup and having troops and weapons sent abroud to occupy and slaughter people, mostly brown people.

This stuff has a way of finding its way back home, as in the saying: if you live by the sword you will die by the sword.

Drug prohibition is also a component of the violence as a large number of homicides are done by gang members engaged in the drug trade.

Creating a war on guns is horrific to think about as the gangs will turn to gunrunning along with the illegal drugs, and instead of a safe traceable transaction with a regulated gun dealer, people will buy their guns from some illicit back alley gun dealer.

None of these policies address the inherent violence that these acts are a symptom of.

    Exactly, KurtBethel.

I find it odd that all of these people are crying "ban guns", but are completely OK with the goverment giving them to our sons and daughters so that they can go to other countries full of brown people and kill THEIR children.

"Ban guns"? That is not the same as "gun control," yet the two concepts are frequently used interchangeably, especially by those who want to demonize any conversation about a common-sense approach to stricter laws regarding the acquisition of guns or the type of guns available.

Why should war-grade weapons be available to the average civilian?

They are not. Perhaps your arguments would carry more weight if you knew what you were talking about.

The shooter in CT used "a Glock 9 mm handgun, a SIG Sauer handgun, killing 26 people, including 20 children, before turning the gun on himself.

The two pistols were found inside the school and a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle was found in the back of his mother's car in the parking lot.

"The damage these weapons can do is just horrific," firearms expert Ronald Scott said.

All three are highly lethal weapons manufactured for combat and to stop criminals. The semi-automatic Glock and SIG Sauer are the two most popular firearms used by law enforcement officers around the country and by private gun owners, said Scott.

The Glock, made in Austria, and the American-made SIG Sauer can fire up to five bullets a second at a velocity of 1,200 feet a second.

Scott said the shooter likely used hollow point bullets, “"The bullet is meant to open up like a flower ... The nose of the bullet and spreads open, creating a devastating wound through tissue and organ that sends the victim intAo almost immediate shock.

    Close enough.

if you think the 9mm is a bad round, you should see what a hunting cartridge does to tissue & bone. Not pretty.

The point I'm trying to make, is that ANY gun can maim & kill. It's time to stop demonizing the *gasp* "assault" weapons. If we ban or control anything, it should be the use of the term "assault weapon". Any WEAPON, when used against another, is an "assault weapon".

Many of the cartridges that are used as hunting rounds started out as military ordnance. The .30-06 was used in the standard issue rifles and machine guns in WWII. The .308 Winchester is still the most popular round for snipers.

Your "war-grade" argument doesn't hold water.

Just because an equally uninformed journalist says the the weapons he used are "war-grade" does not make it true.

All of the weapons and ammo that the wacko used can be obtainted LEGALLY. "war-grade" or FULLY AUTOMATIC weapons, with "war-grade" ammo cartridges are NOT CURRENTLY legal for citizens. Don't get me wrong, I do think that something needs to be changed, and stricter gun purchases checks including mental health evaluations and other general mental health checks should be on the table. We need a hollistic solution to this not a half measure.

This tragedy is uniquely bad in our nations history, and something if not several things definitely need to be done about it.

And you, sir, are quibbling over exceedingly narrow definitions that are becoming increasingly meaningless in the overall discussion. My use of terms, technically correct or slightly less-than, will not amount to a hill of beans when this finally comes up for a rational debate, which is looking to be sooner rather than later.

When 5 year-olds are slaughtered wholesale it is time to call a halt. And I believe this country will.

SO that's your solution? Tighter laws? New legislation?

If access to firearms by the general, non-violent, responsible, law-abiding public is made harder, the criminals, thieves, home invaders, drug dealers, muggers, cartels, rapists, and black market arms dealers will be rubbing their hands together with glee, because they know that the average joe can't get a semi-auto "asault" weapon anymore, leaving them better armed and more able to commit their crimes with less resistance.

Who would you rather be able to own an AR-15? Your trusted neighbor? Or a psycho who wants to break in to your house and "assault" you, steal your things and rape your kids?

The guns themselves aren't just going to magically disappear. The black market trade of them will flourish, leaving the good folks outgunned and unprotected.
