I think you may be reading more into this than really is there.

(Pardon my bolding, but those words jumped out at me as I was wondering how my Elder dad or Elder brother would try to explain this stuff away.)
It is not wrong for a JW to develop a business, get ahead of their contemporaries or have a comfortable lifestyle. We all know plenty of JW elders who fit the bill perfectly.
The question is, where is the individual JW's FOCUS?
If you're born into money, no problem. If you were a money-grubbing, career-advancing "weak" JW for a while and now you've seen the light, no problem. We're glad you're now a Pioneer/Elder and looking good on assembly parts.
I know most here will probably say I'm splitting hairs, but, IMO, this is exactly the explanation most Elders I know would give for these quotes.
Also, there's the word "develop". It's one thing to "have" a business, it's quite another to FOCUS on it and "develop" it into something bigger. All the while letting "Kingdom Interests" (unpaid work for the WT) slide into the background.

to pay my light bill and put food on the table, made me focus on providin' for my family

Another poster wrote about the WTS telling people "no job." Well, wouldn't that be good! The Society is going to make some big $$$ from selling Brooklyn properties. They should never have any money worries. The WTS could then build a Waco/Jonestown compound(s) in many places through the world, and invitel the JWs (remaining) to come work there in preparation for the big A. Then, the GB would have absolute control. Sound freaky? Think about it.
GL TIREBITER- Exactly. All the self employed JW's are always recruited for free labor for the quick builds. Typical WT society " who can I use " syndrome.
QUANDRY- Good points. It's extremely hypocritical of the WT society to expect JW's not to pursue good paying jobs, yet expect them to fork out $ 4.00 a gallon in gas going door to door. Do as I say , not as I do is the WT slogan.
MY THREE SONS- Very true. WT society is flexing their muscles by manipulating the minds of JW's to be in fear. Disgusting.
LDRNOMO- There is so much BS the WT society has handed down that the BS mound - it would dwarf Mt. Everest. Some JW's will not listen to this drivel, but many will be controlled. Good points

SHOPAHOLIC- This information makes my blood boil as well Shop. I have so many JW relatives who have been prevented ( including myself ) from pursuing careers that would have made our lives more financially tolerable. Fortunately- some of my nieces and nephews in their 20's and 30's have pursued their education as well as careers instead of listening to the WT society- and for that I'm grateful and happy for them. This cult sucks.

BUBBLEGUM APOTHEOSIS - Very good point. WT society has shifted all the blame to the elders and the individual JW's themselves - of course the WT society has always done that anyways. They've never admitted to mistakes and are becoming even more intrusive into JW's lives.
NUGGET- You make really good points here. The money grubbing WT society has never felt the need to share any REAL financial information with JW's about where all the money goes after selling off billions $$$$ in real estate. You would think as a JW member, each one should know and be informed - but noooooo, - that's not how WT does it. They are a very greedy coprporation and expect far too much from their members financially.
