For a myriad of reasons, we don't make learning to swim a priority.

Does this mean to say that these six kids that jumped in did not know how to swim?
I assumed from reading the link that the people on the bank watching them were the ones who did not know how to swim, and that was why they could not jump in to save them.

They were wading in shallow water when the ground just sank!
The waders couldn't swim; they drowned trying to save each other.
The family on the bank couldn't swim, either.
What a tragedy!

It's a tragedy! If you don't know how to swim, stay out of the water unless you KNOW someone can swim and help you if something happens.

I've always worried that my daughter or grandkids would get into the water, something would happen and I couldn't help them because I'm not a good swimmer. That's why I'm not a "water person".

I never learned to swim because, even though we lived nearly on the banks of a creek, fear of water was instilled in me from infancy.
