Not so much nation as "racial heritage" passed on maternally. If your mother was, you are. My father is not, but my mother is, so I am (which is how you have black african and whitebread european and in the middle jews from the middle east in the phenotype, even though we are all the same "race).
You can be an Arab born in Israel and be Israeli without being a Jew. You can convert to the religion Judaism without being a Jew by birth. Religious I am not a Jew, but by birth I am and I am not Israeli at all.

Yes, I was baptized as a Southern Baptist in 1989 after I left the JW's- didn't take, I guess and around 1996 I decided the Jesus story was more story than fact. In 2000 I married a Jewish woman I had known since 1995 - in 2001 after 6 months of study with a Rabbi ( and learning to read Hebrew) I converted to Judaism. I remember they asked me if I believed in G-d (yes) and if I still believed in Jesus as the Messiah (no). A common picture is of Jews in black hats praying at the old Temple wall in Jerusalem, but that is not what Judaism is really about.
Maybe some have noticed a necklace that has the initials, M.O.T., member of the tribe,- an alternative to the Star of David.

the proof is that the Jews have survived as a people, kept the Torah intact and kept their language intact- what other group/religion can claim that?
