It was, bible commentaries are great reads, gives you an interesting perspective, even if you don't agree with them.
In the case of the Cross, it seems liek a plausable one, but even that commentary ( along with every othe rone i have read) states that the term "stauros" referes to a "Beam, pole, cross or cross/beam", sort of along the lines of the greek term for Hand that means everythign from the fingers to the elbow.
