You can't "miss" something you've never had. But NOW, I'm like a child. I want it all!

I was indoctrinated to the hilt.......so I despised the holidays as Satan's snares. I have softened some but still see them as retail boosters.

Majority of my peers were only JWs when their parents were present. Most kids hated being 'different' for most of their school years.

None of us however celebrate them in our home still (well maybe some JW version of b-days).

Our children have a party once a month, we do lots of treasure hunts and toy swaps and like all born/raised JW parents we overcompensate almost to the point of materialism.

My kids get to voice their own discernments on whether to participate or to opt out.

I kinda like not being a slave to the whole holiday mill.

The Old Testament was a good guide for wandering around the desert; thousands of years ago.

Witness kids who claim they don't miss or don't care about B-days and other holidays are lying. When they leave, the *truth* comes out.

    edited to add:

Some interesting laws in the old testament. I like the long hair. For men. Why aren't the dubs following that one? Beards too.

VIII, not if you're indoctrinated as a child. No lying here.

I was indoctrinated as a child.

I was a fourth generation JW.

I loved being told to sit in the coatroom during birthdays during class.

I also really enjoyed sitting in the hallways when the coatroom was too filled with coats.

Sitting while everyone stood for the Pledge was always a good time; I was a lazy child. And every other thing to stand out as that weird JW kid who was not to be anyone's friend because I was different and couldn't say "Happy Birthday" to them because I'd invite Satan into our home.

Birthdays? Who needs to feel special? Certainly not a child. All children like being told that they are lucky to get food, clothing and shelter everyday. That they are given gifts everyday by their parents. What gifts? Just that. Food, clothing and shelter. Oh, and lest I forget--Watchtowers and Awakes. Now those really made me feel good about myself.

    Especially "Young People Ask..."

Of course J W kids miss out.. In my experience the "We can give presents anytime" answer is just an excuse for not giving very much..Of course parents vary and by and large J W families are loving ones..

Did I feel unhappy when I was small ? No. Perhaps I was brainwashed but I never wanted to celebrate Christmas or wished for a birthday present. The only thing that I really wanted to do was let off fireworks on Guy Fawkes Night ( a British custom celebrating a historic attempt to blow up the House of Parliament) . It is in November and the bonfires and fireworks in the dark night looked really exciting from our back bedroom window. I could see no connection with The Bible so why was it wrong??

Re this thread - lets remember that we are here to discuss and exchange differing views. I for one welcomed Renaia's input ..lets discuss it..We are better off with a J W supporter here.

I believe that Outlaw was out of order in putting her down. It is not his thread , once you start one it belongs to us all.

When I was a kid, I was taught to believe that remaining loyal was more important than eating a slice of cake. I never felt bad for myself. If anything, I was proud to take a stand for Jehovah God.

one person says they make Christmas a celebration to God etc then 3 paragraphs on how much they missed out on the fun, party, being like others etc

then numerous people also extolling the virtues of this fun times, being like others and party stuff they miss as children nothing about God...

I accept parties are fun especially for kids thats but the things you talk of as sacred are the partiness of christmas Santa being the God of it, i'm sorry but I can give my children family occasions and fun without worshiping the lead party and it's God of these times.

Thank you for clearing that up. We don't care how you bring up your children. You've already made your point.

My reply: A generalization of people does not make the observance of a day wrong. I personally observe the day to the Lord. His Spirit and love is behind each gift I give. JW kids are surely deprived of a normal childhood and enjoyments of life. A JW who followed Paul words on observance of days to the lord being permissable would be dfed regardless of the spirit in which it is done.

then numerous people also extolling the virtues of this fun times, being like others and party stuff they miss as children nothing about God...

My reply: I agree it has more commercialism than needed and many ignore God in their observance. That does not mean all do, nor does this very weak guilt by association argument hold any water.
