Dark Impulses

I really don't think there is a right or wrong way to react to CHL's statement - just different opinions. I find it funny that some are trying to paint the negative reactions as wrong.

There's nothing wrong with having a negative reaction; it is dishonest to mischaracterize the statement as something it is not.

Would any of you say that there is something wrong with me for not acknowledging my “dark side”?

It would be wrong to condemn someone who does.

I haven't condemned him. But the statement was made and it's funny that there are some trying to condemn reactions that have not been to the positive for that statement. Why?

I don't think you have condemned him. You have mischaracterized his statement, though. Why?

I did nothing of the sort. I only stated my reaction to it.

Void, I’m going to be as honest as I can possibly be. CHL’s statement is fucked up. There, I said it. It bothers me deeply to hear someone make a statement like his.

MrsJones: On another thread you filtered CHL's comments into simple fantasizing of doing harm. That was a mischaracterization. It did not include the context of CHL looking within the darker reaches of his psyche and making a distinction between this small part of himself and what he would actually do in life. I believe that you either misunderstood CHL (and you assert you understand him very well), or your statement was not accurate.

Lola: I appreciate your discomfort. In my experience, those that profess a lack of any dark thoughts have been the most dangerous.

Most people that lead an examined life find parts of themselves they are uncomfortable with. It isn't healthy to bury these impulses, deny them, pretend they aren't there.

People may be uncomfortable with the expression of these tendancies. We *should* be uncomfortable with them. But condemning them merely moves them back under the surface, where they do more harm than speaking of them ever can.

I'm not a mental health professional. I am not making a diagnossis of anyone. I am not saying CHL fits this description, I do not know him.

However, the opening post of this thread brings some of these criteria to mind.

    FYI

Changling: The actions of the GB brings that article to mind.

it is in my nature to seek out chaos. i love violence. i like to hurt people. i would like to watch the world burn and hear its screams knowing that im the one that poured the gasoline and lit the match. the idea of it makes me smile. this is my shadow self.

Maybe he didn't come across right but there is nothing in that statement above that is going to make me go happy happy joy joy about it. My reaction is my reaction, his shadow self is his shadow self. I do not and will not feel guilt or chastised for my reaction to that statement above.
