Gas to hit 7 dollars per gallon

However, going out and buying a big SUV for a daily commute is ridiculous. My neighbor has been complaining for more than year about the price of gas but bought a Hummer H2 about 2 years ago that gets about 9 miles to a gallon. With his 60 miles roundtrip commute to work, he is using nearly 11 gallons per day. At about $4.25 per gallon now, that is nearly $50 per day, $250 per week and over $1,000 per month.

Yes, I have an SUV also. A 2002 model that has less than 20,000 miles on it. It used mainly for hauling our boat to the ocean. Other than an occasional drive to work, it pretty much sits in the yard.

Maybe its the company you keep. I don't anybody who owns a hummer, I don't know anybody who bought an SUV just to tool around in. The only people I know who own trucks are farmers who actually use their trucks in their jobs and contractors who haul tools in theirs. Those are work trucks. I've never owned either and only because I'm a pretty conservative spender to begin with - when I had a boat, we had it hauled down to the bay and paid to dock it there so we didn't need a large vehicle. It isn't only people here in the USA that are complaining by the way - if you read enough, you'll see that the frustration and anger is hitting ALL people around the world. Those Europeans that everyone is so fond of comparing others to are screaming just as loud - I just wish that the USA had the balls to clog the highways and streets and march on the capital like some other countries have. A 50 mile back up of trucks and cars and a few million marching on DC might get some news for a change. sammieswife.

If the American public had any sense we would do the things we had to do during the 73 Embargo,

    even -odd days...self imposed rationing

    carpools

    55 MPH speed limit

heat set to 68 in public buildning

gasless Days... towns or groups would refuse to by gas on certain days of the week

    Truckers strikes

this is not a artificial shortage created to raise prices.. it's price fixing for the sake out gouging us. You folks in the UK pay a lot for fuel... but your cost is 40-60% tax ours is a lot less.

The same collective strategys that broke the embargo will fix the fixers... we just aint smart enough to do it.

Yea, like the excellent free health care in Canada - not!!! It sucks,

Do a poll, honey. We have plenty of Canadian posters here. And we have folks from the UK and Australia with universal healthcare. Ask them if they want to give it up and have no health care except for the few who could afford private health insurance. I bet you have a Ronald Reagen poster in the corner of your living room as a shrine with 50 or 60 various sized candles and each night you get on your knees and pray for God to bless the soul of Reagen/dead and GW Bush/ evil incarnate and to help them keep all these welfare mamma's from ruining our country.

Hill, there isn't an oil shortage, so how is even/odd supposed to help?

any and all conservation methods would tend to limit demand... demand goes down... supply goes up ...price goes down. ecomomics 101. You can manipulate the market from either side of the equation

that embargo was OPEC holding oil back...we cut back ...they got wise and we started buying again.

You sure act blond some times

Your just flat out wrong!! ...and YES there is an OIL SHORTAGE - read the futures contracts and how they are ALL BEING SOLD AT THE END OF THE QUARTERS. The markets are uncoupling, and oil is becoming a scarcer commod. Do research before spouting off inaccurate data...

Oh, and good for those countries. This is America, which is slowly going the way of socialism. Ronald Reagan was an idiot. Yes, "welfare mamma's" as you put it ARE destroying the infrastructure of this country - read up on history - it seems to repeat itself very nicely...

correct me if I am wrong here... Oil embargo was in 73...Nixon with Ford in the wings for 4 years...Carter-4years...then Reagan-GWB for 12 years... hmmm 8 years of Clinton and 8 of Bush2...

I wont even try to figure out who was majority party in Congress over the last 35 years. And someplace in this mess we got a Sec of Energy.

So far about all Energy has done is clean up some power houses. We have not improved oil production or expanded refining plants to speak of... we have not made auto build a better car other than raising mpg standards... we still cant make a nuclear plant that works right or is affordable to build and coal has been in and out of vouge at least twice I can remember

Other than a few windfarms, solar panels and High E building standards we have not done anything to get the oil monkey off our backs. Forgot this.. a few investors put a few garbage and sawdust burning Co gens up that put up a few megs of electric when they run... and they figured out how to subsidise the corn and grain market in a sure to bust biofuel fad.

If the US went broke we would probably become a second world country... the return to an isolationist, agrarian society would do up good.

Yea... oil is short and futures are up. More people want it and the folks who pump it out of the ground have slowed down the stream.

NO, NO, NO. My advice to you is to prepare. Food is conservatively going up 46% in the next few months and fertilizers are triple in cost with potash being in extremely short supply. Oil, food, energy - things are going to get BAD and lots of people are going to suffer BIG TIME!!!!

Central bank body warns of Great Depression

Story link: Central bank body warns of Great Depression

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the organisation that fosters cooperation between central banks, has warned that the credit crisis could lead world economies into a crash on a scale not seen since the 1930s.

In its latest quarterly report, the body points out that the Great Depression of the 1930s was not foreseen and that commentators on the financial turmoil, instigated by the US sub-prime mortgage crisis, may not have grasped the level of exposure that lies at its heart.

According to the BIS, complex credit instruments, a strong appetite for risk, rising levels of household debt and long-term imbalances in the world currency system, all form part of the loose monetarist policy that could result in another Great Depression.

The report points out that between March and May of this year, interbank lending continued to show signs of extreme stress and that this could be set to continue well into the future.

It also raises concerns about the Chinese economy and questions whether China may be repeating mistakes made by Japan, with its so called bubble economy of the late 1980s.

Really? You missed what I quouted above. Some of us in this country grew up country dumb and poor. Those that didnt worry me. Going broke and stuff like that is something a lot of folks wont cope with well.

Not to many years ago you would see gardens in the inner city... no one has the skills to live poor anymore... not even poor people... maybe a good bust cycle will wake this country up.

I knew my grandparents well... and my dad grew up at the tail of the depression (that didnt leave rural Michigan for years). Folks who lived in those time got tough fast... its a shame that what they learned is not remembered by their grandchildren.

    Sigh....

I will hold you to this - food will go up 46% in the next few months.

If there is one truly lasting effect from being a dub is the inability for some to think just a little objectively and positively. So I'll mark this thread and repy in, say, three months for you. You said a few months, I'll give you three.

Sinis, you are incredible. Just how many welfare mammas do you think there are? And hey, yeah they are responsible for the state this country is in. I am going to resist the urge to call you an idiot and tell you that you need to watch what's going on. The corporation and special interests and republican party is what is ruining the economy in this country. And Sinis, do a poll of our Canadian, British, Australian and others with universal healthcare. Ask them if they want to give it up to fight your so called "socialism".

Folks who lived in those time got tough fast... its a shame that what they learned is not remembered by their grandchildren.

Maybe they didn't teach their grandchildren? Who is teaching kids anything anymore? They park them in front of their x boxes or TV sets and they don't teach them anything. I tried to grow a garden back in the 60's. No one would help me and the effort failed. I was 9.
