I think what bothers most people about gay marriage is the fact that for most people, marriage - and if not marriage itself, then the marriage ceremony - is a religious arrangement. And we all know what the bible says about homosexuality, so by default in the minds of religious people, the already "evil" homosexuals then border the sacriligious when trying to form a dedicated life partnership by calling the associated ceremony a wedding.
Keep in mind that really religious people get ther proverbial panties in a wad over lots of things, so this is just par for the course.
I am not against gay marriage. Whatever two consenting adults decide to do with each other is just fine with me. If my next door neighbor wants to get married to somebody of the same sex, alrighty then. I'll send a card. (Do they make gay wedding cards? I'm not sure. Haven't had to look for one yet.....) Just as long as my rights aren't changed in any way, and I still get to have sex with and marry a member of the opposite sex, I'm fine.
It all boils down to this: There are too many people out there for whom it is not enough that their personal rights are intact and that they can choose to do whatever they deem appropriate for themselves. They want to go a step further and impose their morals on the rest of us. They would like to tell us when to pray, who we can marry, if we can use birth control, how we can have sex, when we can buy a beer, what movies we can watch.... you get the picture. I live in Georgia. It is the year 2008, and it is still illegal to buy a beer in a liquor store on a Sunday. Why? Because "christians" thought that was a good idea to make a law that favors their religion and tells everybody else how they can live. Up until sometime in the mid 1970s, interracial marriage was illegal here, much for the same reasons. It was against the law here to have sex any other way than with the man on top (on top of a woman, that is....) up until about the year 2000. And technically, it is still illegal to have sex with anyone but your spouse.
Those are the people who are against gay marriage. Gay people, don't feel too bad. If they had their way, a lot more things would be illegal. Besides, if gay marriage finally became legal, the religious nut balls would just find something else to whine incessantly about until some sort of law were passed to appease their dumb masses. I know it sounds selfish, but as long as they're picking on you, they aren't picking on the rest of us! Who knows, maybe they'd outlaw sex all together and we'd all be screwed. And not in the good way. Because that would be illegal. If they had their way. Which I hope they don't. Because I like sex. Great, now I have sex on the brain. Which means my brain is thinking of a way to have sex on the bed. Which now means that this paragraph is over. Hee hee.
