The Natural Beauty of Your Neighborhood

    CoCo,

The natural beauties of my neighborhood are the people on my street.

When someone's pet goes missing and they are outside calling and calling....all of the neighbor's come out and try to help them find their missing darling.

There is a person on my street that takes care of wounded wildlife. Last summer a hawk grabbed a squirrel out of my tree and then dropped him. I ran for my wildlife neighbor who is well versed in handling a variety of creatures. It was a baby squirrel. It had a head wound and a broken leg. It was touch and go for a week or two, but the squirrel is happy and well today. People bring him birds with broken wings and he just has a knack for healing small creatures.

People in my neighborhood have a variety of fruit trees and everyone shares with each other when these different fruits are in season.

I once found mail in my box that did not belong to me. I walked down the street to give it to it's proper owner and she insisted I must come in for refreshments.

Some people in my neighborhood come from exotic places where I have never been. They have stories and photographs to share. And I have learned a little about their customs.

There is a cordialness in my neighborhood that makes it special. The people here are its natural beauty.

No, but we certainly had a lot of Moonshine last night!

    (*cameo-d corks it*)

Wow. Was it ever gorgeous! I went out several times to observe its trip through the skies. Everything here was lit up like late afternoon. My thoughts wandered to people who live in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

It was a moon like this.

and my kitteh loved being outside all night chasing imaginary creatures in the movements of breezes.

Have you ever seen a moon garden?

Usually you would plant a variety of white flowers and plants that are silvery and catch the light. Some people use white rocks in the moon garden. It's also nice to have fragrant plants like moon vine and night blooming jasmine.

I think I will start a moon garden area this spring. I have just the spot for it! And do you know how I will add to my moon garden eventually? I will root some clippings from a few plants I have, and I will walk around my neighborhood to see if some of my cordial neighbors and others I have not met.....will be willing to trade some white flower cuttings, etc. for my little plants!

Just for posterity, I want to make a note here, CoCo. This full moon was a Special Full Moon.

It was the first full moon of 2009. And here's a clip from the news about it.

If skies are clear Saturday, go out at sunset and look for the giant moon rising in the east. It will be the biggest and brightest one of 2009, sure to wow even seasoned observers.

But the orbit is not a perfect circle. One portion is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to our planet than the farthest part, so the moon's apparent size in the sky changes. Saturday night (Jan. 10) the moon will be at perigee, the closest point to us on this orbit.

It will appear about 14 percent bigger in our sky and 30 percent brighter than some other full moons during 2009, according to NASA.

This month's full moon is known as the Wolf Moon from Native American folklore. The full moon's of each month are named. January's is also known as the Old Moon and the Snow Moon.

At moonrise, the moon will appear even larger than it will later in the night when it's higher in the sky. This is an illusion that scientists can't fully explain. Some think it has to do with our perception of things on the horizon vs. stuff overhead.

So sorry for the delay getting back to you, cameo. The moon garden is incredible.

As a creature both nocturnal and feral, I luxuriate in such fabulous flora luminescing in the night's small hours.

    Vive eternellement la belle lune!

    Dear Beks:

Beautiful! That's not unlike my northern California afternoon. I got cabin fever today so left and braved a spate of wet while finishing an outdoor construction job. Nothing like the great out-of-doors!

Thanks for those beautiful shots ...

    Love,

    CoCo
