Crazy JW Superstitions...
by Confucious inhey!
ok, we all know of this uncanny word play about not saying, "you were lucky," and not saying "bless you" after someone sneezes.
but this is a bizarre one i heard.

You know, I used to actually be afraid to pray out loud at times for fear Satan would use it against me. I thought that if he knew my darkest fears, when the time for the tribulation came that is what he would "test" me with. I was terrified that he might know that I was afraid of snakes, rats, etc. (like there are a lot of people who aren't!)

Thanks everybody for your kind words. My only hope is that the boy who got hit is doing alright; I looked in the paper this morning and didn't see anything about the accident. (We live in a small community so things like that are often in the paper.) I would bet a million dollars that everyone on this board would do more than that lovely "Christian" dub family - but what's the big deal, if the kid dies they parents can be converted to dubs in their desperation to see him in the paradise, right?

So today I'm driving home and a block from my house there's a boy on the ground. He'd been hit by a car while riding his bike. Everyone had stopped and I ran up to help if I could. The boy was conscious but in a lot of pain. Someone had already called 911 but no one had notified his parents. I asked him what their number was and called it, but it was a cell phone and it said the caller was "unavailable." I asked if he had any friends we could call and he pointed to the 12-year old nearby - a JW I knew from my old hall who lived down the street from me. The JW boy said the hurt boy's parents lived a few blocks away on 12th (we were on 20th Ave). I said I'd drive him down there, and he said he had to ask his dad (after all, it's an emergency, and we've only known each other for at least 6+ years, I'm so dangerous) but I turn my car around and he runs down two houses to ask his dad who says NO! He then proceeds to run the 8+ blocks to the parents' house. It takes him 10-15 minutes to get back and report that they weren't home. It made me so angry - there was no way of knowing how badly the boy was hurt, and those extra 5 minutes (had they been home) could have potentially, for all this other boy's JW dad knew, be the last time they could have seen their son alive. But it was more important to keep his JW son out of the hands of a non-df'd evil person like me for the 30-60 seconds we would have been in the car than to care for the hurt boy. True love of neighbor. I left soon after, as the paramedics had arrived and I couldn't do anything but get in their way. The dubs were still out on the corner watching, as if it was some f*(*& sideshow. By the time I got home I was shaking with horror and worry for the boy who'd been hit (he was crying in pain, his legs splayed in a very unnatural way and who knows what internal injuries) and disgust with the dub pigs (I'm sorry, I'm really mad) who thought his injuries were entertainment to be watched but god forbid we actually help. Sometimes I wish there was a hell.

You know, when I first read this story I thought "what in the world? I would have jumped up and helped her" but then I realized I was thinking like a free-minded individiual. As I read more and more replies I began to remember what it was like to be a dub....I would have been afraid to jump up to help her. It would have looked like I was trying to be super-righteous, or I would have been stepping out of turn when it was the attendants or at least a brother's responsibility to help her and I wouldn't have wanted to get chastised for presumptousness.

Parents Refusing Life-Saving Blood Transfusions
by kitties_and_horses_oh_my! ini'm in a speech class in college and would like to make full use of it to expose jw's as much as possible, but in a respectable manner that won't get me in trouble with the professor.
i've decided to speak on whether or not it's okay for parents to refuse life-saving medical treatment for their children.
i was interested in what particular arguments hold the most weight with you.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate all your perspectives. Megadude, you're right - my post and topic header weren't the same. I originally had thought I would cover refusing medical tx (of which blood transfusions are a part) so as to not "target" Witnesses in my teacher's eyes - but what fun would that be? All of your ideas are so helpful - I'll post again when I get the outline done. Nina - good to hear from you!
Hugs,
Kitties

What's your favorite JW word or phrase?
by Sara Annie inin a minimus moment, i find myself interested in knowing which buzz-words and phrases in jw publications stand out the most to you?
when i read wt literature, i constantly find myself astounded by how transparently cultish the language is.
in an earlier, unrelated thread, i said the following: .

The "dog has returned to its vomit." Speaking of us, of course. My dad used that one on me, I really thought it was a Christ-like way to refer to another person.
