Has anyone here joined OA or any of its sister organizations? I know I'm a compulsive eater - I can remember sneaking food when I was 8 or 9 years old, and it's just gotten worse from there on out. I went to my first OA meeting last Saturday and have (amazingly) managed to remain "abstinent" (three meals a day with nothing in between) for almost the entire week. I've lost 5 lbs, too, which is nice but not the main issue. What I'm concerned about is how those of you who might be agnostic or atheist dealt with step #2: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." I dont know if there is such a power, and if there is some higher power, would he care to "restore (me) to sanity"? Also, sometimes I freak out when I read the literature because it almost seems cultish, but I know I'm just reacting from the fright of leaving the dubs. Anyway, I'd love to hear what people think of OA, how they've managed the steps, how they're doing now, etc. Thank you!

Hi and welcome! Our stories are so parallel, it's almost bizarre: abusive parents, suicidal urges, etc. I hope you enjoy getting to know people here. They're very supportive.
Hugs,
Kitties

A couple of thoughts...
When I was a dub, I once shunned a sweet woman who had da'd herself. All she said to me was "I hope you're feeling better," as I had been quite sick before she da'd herself. For years I felt guilty for not saying anything. Once I left the borg I looked her up and we had a tearful reunion. Sometimes all it takes is time and a little independent thought...maybe one day you'll get a phone call from a very sorry dub, too. I hope. ((((Hugs))))
BTW, Stacey - I think that is so great, just go up and be incredibly nice - what a way to rise above it! Of course, you know it will either a) scare them or b) piss them off so there's so pleasure in it too. ;-)
Oh, and the woman I shunned - she told me that once she went up to a sister who had been a good friend after she was da'd and the sister told her - in a public restroom - "don't talk to me!" The other women in the restroom were horrified and once the sister left promptly started asking my friend questions about why she'd been treated so terribly.

Woman: "Good boys don't kiss like that."
Man: "Yes they f*( do!"
(That scene had me very happy ;-) for like two weeks after!)

Marrying Young
by Descender insomething has been bothering me as of late.
my younger brother, who is 17 years old plans on getting married right after he turns 18 this upcoming year.
i have quite a few problems with this, but he thinks that he knows it all at his age.. i'm concerned for several reasons.

I know it seems like he's not at all ready for marriage, but I think dooming a marriage merely because one is 18 isn't good either....I was married at 18, my dh was 21, and we will be married 7 years next year. I was a super-strict dub, he was a lot more laid back, and we both left the org a year ago. A lot in common with your brother. My parents were really against us getting married, but we loved each other, we've worked hard at it, and our marriage is the one thing in my life that I am the most proud of and happy about.Oh, btw, my dh didn't have a college degree either - makes good money now - and I'm back in school while working two part-time jobs (one of which is janitorial at nights). I just don't think anyone else can truly predict the course a marriage will take. It's up to the two involved. Oh, one more thing - I was a fifth generation dub, more like 90 years of witnesses in my family. I am happier now than I have ever been and I owe 99% of that to my husband.

Would you call police on the JW's , if door to door was banned ???
by run dont walk incourt: jehovah's witnesses can knock on doors .
canadian press .
montreal the quebec court of appeal upheld a lower-court decision wednesday, striking down a municipal bylaw restricting when jehovah's witnesses can go door-to-door to promote their religion.

I wouldn't call the police. I mean, when you were a dub, didn't you think you were doing the right thing? You weren't a bad person, just misled. How is calling the cops going to help them? Are we going to sink to a level of revenge and punishment just because we regret the time we wasted being a dub?

Disgusting: Torture of live chickens at Tyson
by kitties_and_horses_oh_my! inplease look at the following link:.
i'm not a big peta supporter - i think they too often only tell one side of the story - but if you read virgil butler's statement i think you'll find there aren't too many ways to look at the situation that would put it in a good light.
dry ice bombs shoved up a chicken's rectum so it would blow apart, chickens scalded to death in so much pain that their eyes pop out of their heads, live chickens having their wings and legs ripped off by sadistic employees - it makes me sick.

I don't give 100% credence to PETA either, but I have a close friend who worked at the local IBP plant in quality control and she told us similar stories. That was what led to me originally becoming a vegetarian - just kneeling down in the kitchen petting my kitties while she told my husband and me story after story, sick to my stomach and knowing I could never again eat meat.

The absurdity of petitionary prayer
by logansrun inof all the neurotic and irrational ideas religion has come up with, the notion that god(s) intervenes in the flow of natural events due to a human's prayer has got to be one of the craziest.
let us illustrate the lunacy of the situation.
you have, in your possession, a serum that will either cure the child or at least lessen his pain.

I prayed to God before I tried to kill myself. I prayed for days, for weeks, for months, but the pain didn't go away. I almost died that night, only to be yelled at by my elder father when I woke up in ICU because I didn't have enough faith. I asked him why God would let me go through so much pain and never help me, and he told me to remember Job.
If there's a God, I don't know where he was then.

The Worst Thing You Ever Did As A Jehovah's Witness
by minimus inwhat's the worst thing you did as a jw?.......for me, it was to help other persons come to love the "organization".
-
kitties_and_horses_oh_my!
- same as wtsn, not going to my sister-in-law's wedding because she was inactive
- preaching to my little brother about Jehovah and his standards (fortunately my bro didn't listen!)
- hammering my best friend constantly about improving her "spirituality"
- snottily asking a friend why he wasn't a publisher
- when I was talking to an old high-school friend and she used the f- word, I replied "well your language certainly has grown up" - what an ass I was!!

Do you tell your spouse or partner EVERYTHING?
by doodle-v infrom my experience, and im fairly young so i still have a lot to learn, but i found that being honest can be very difficult and it also takes a good level of trust from both parties.
one night my fiance and i just sat and told each other everything about our past, you know, (if i tell him that he might leave) that kind of stuff.
well i'll tell you it was one of the most difficult things i've ever done.

I try to, but sometimes it takes me awhile (like months) before I work up the nerve. Like telling drwtsn that I closed the garage door on his beloved car...umm...no marks were left, and I think it took me about a year before I confessed. It's hard for me to hold stuff inside, makes me feel like I'm being dishonest with him. He's always there for me, keeps loving me, but some things I do are just so f*(*& stupid, or are things I keep doing even though I know what I need to do to avoid them but I don't do it, that I just am embarassed to tell anyone. Even my therapist at times. I wish there was someone in the world I could tell every little thing to, as if somehow that would purge my soul. I would make a good Catholic! :-P
