  RE: The John Denver urban legend. I heard it too (that Denver would "kick the JWs out of his concerts"). Then I talked to another JW who was supposedly better informed. She said she knew for a fact that Denver had friends who were JWs, and had even studied at one time, and (according to her) what he actually said was, "If there are any JWs in the audience, the next segment will be a patriotic one, and if that bothers your conscience you might want to step out and go to the bathroom or get something to eat or drink til it's over." It offended this sister that Denver was trying to be nice to JWs and was getting negative lies told about him for it.

  I never knew either way. I just knew I loved his music and wish he hadn't died.

  Adventures at the District Convention

  well, after a 15 month absence from the kingdom hall, i once again found myself in the biggest kingdom hall of all the district convention.

  as in previous years, the material presented was dull and repetitious, so once again, i was forced to provide my own entertainment.

  Almost makes me want to go to a convention...with a group of apostates, to sit up in the nosebleed section with a cooler full of alcoholic beverages to to an "MST3K" on it as it was going on! That would actually be kinda fun...especially if certain members of my old cong were there to see me doing it

  Brothermisogynist - he's outraged that women even sit in the hall, and is constantly reminding sisters that they should dress more modestly (a knee should only be seen by a husband)

  Brother Mysogynist also firmly believes that anything that comes out of a woman's mouth besides a humble, "Yes, dear" or "Of course, brother" is gossip. And he rails against sisters' gossiping (which includes phrases like, "I heard your wife was ill, can we come over and clean your house for you and bring you a meal so she doesn't have to worry?"...no, I'm not kidding or exaggerating) at every part he gives.

  Harry Potter Promoting Occultism??

  is harry potter promoting occultism, in your opinion?

  i haven't read any of the books, but i saw the first movie.

  i do some stuff that would be laballed occult by the wt, yet i didn't see any of that there.

  You know, it's true that many Christians like Tolkien and are freaked out by Harry Potter.

  It's also true that there is wayyy more magic in Tolkien's books, plus other races which have their own creator gods, etc, and the basic premise of both books is that good is battling evil and some of the good guys use magic and some of the bad guys do, too.

  So why are the Christians so wild about the dangers of Harry?

  My guess - one word: Witchcraft.

  Good old Gandalf can wizard from morning til night and the Christians (some of them...some of the fundiest don't like Tolkien anymore than they like Harry) just love him. But you throw in that word witchcraft and Christians freak. See...wizards who use magic can be good guys...but women who call themselves witches just can't. And Harry goes to a school that proudly proclaims to teach witchcraft??? This has your average Baptist sh*tting bricks.

  My parents (both fundies) stopped railing about the books when, in front of a group of people, I confronted mom:

  "Have you even read the books?"

  "No."

  "Well I have and whoever told you that is full of sh*t. (it was their pastor and I knew that) That's the most ridiculous claim I've ever heard. If you're going to talk about the books I suggest you read them. You used to be a teacher, for God's sake...you should know better!" (she shut up and I haven't heard from her on the subject since)

  They think wizards don't have to be 'in league with the devil'...but witches sure must.

  Asleif...not in league with the devil...I don't bowl. (plus the fact that I don't believe one exists...I don't serve Satan, I don't have the recipe)

  BIG DEAL EXPERIENCES

  i can't get over the the lack of depth that exists in the world of jw experiences.

  years ago, the typical experience was how a person spoke the "truth" to one person and the result was that 10 bible studies were started and 7 got baptized in less than 6 months.

  notice the experience from the czech republic that i will abbreviate from the 8-1-03 wt......2 witnesses talked to a lady through a closed door.

  Funny Memory

  in the coffee shop this morning they were playing eddie money's two tickets to paradise.. i love this song, but haven't heard it in a while and it brought back the funniest memory.. when the song came out when i was a kid, i remember my mother laughing at it and saying, "if only eddie money knew that we really have two tickets to paradise," (namely the watchtower and awake).

  hee hee.

  actually it's kind of pitiful that i can't even listen to an eddie money song without some bizarre dub flashback!.

  Ummm, first of all, the title should read, "Even non-Orthodox Rabbis Question Bible"

  ...and really, only fundamentalists of the "Big 3" (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) take the Bibles accounts as (you should excuse the expression) "Gospel truth". Most others will say that the accuracy of the historical accounts are not proven, or that they are allegory, or something. Makes it easier when archaeology or historical research proves that the stuff didn't happen.

  The priests and nuns who taught Old Testament literature at my Catholic college did not teach that the Bible was an accurate history book. In my experience most middle-of-the-road religious leaders will say that you need to learn from the spirit of the stories of the OT especially, they don't need to be 'historical fact' for them to give you important insight on how you should live your life. Or words to that effect.

  I, personally, just find it easier to lump the Bible in with all the other religious texts of that time period, at not expect it to be anything else.

  (Of course, I suppose that you Wiccans out there could get me to rethink this point, if “riddikulus” is an actual magic word…)

  All words are magic words

  What makes the "magic" is energy and intent. Sort of the way some Christians think the harder you pray the louder God hears you and the better chance you have of having your prayer answered (they way you want it).

  Magic doesn't work by reading a spell book and inserting tab A into slot B, which is how magic works in the Potter books and most other fairy tales. Most Wiccans and others who do magic (not all witches are Wiccans, most Wiccans say they work magic and are witches) have to make up a "spell" (I've even stopped thinking of it that way) by using things that have meaning to them...want to do a spell to bring abundance into your life? First you have to use items that symbolize abundance to you...using a store-bought spell that uses items that signals abundance to somebody else does not necessarily work on your own subconscious. Which is how magic works.

  Harry Potter was raised by people who abused and belittled him, until he was 'rescued' by those who were his parents' friends and brought to Hogwarts where he was appreciated. If "giving kids the idea" that you don't have to put up with abuse bothers some people, that tells me more about the people than it does about the books.

  Edited to add: And if there's something wrong with teaching kids to be empathetic to creatures like snakes who are kept in glass cages and tormented by nasty people like Harry's cousin, then I prefer the "something wrong" seating section, thanks.

  what song makes you turn up the car radio and start singing!.

  song that kicks in the automatic pilot and takes over.. i heard a bunch of "steely dan" on the radio today and most of the songs i had completely forgotten about.

  they made some good songs in the 70's/80's.
