Well if they're greedy, they're being very short-sighted about it. Their members would have a lot more disposable income to donate if they went to college!

Okay, okay, on a (sort of) serious note... I assume you mean the benefits of marriage vs having a live-in partner?
Pros
1. The commitment thing is kind of cool. It does provide a sense of security and stability. Then again, you may get that from a long-term nonmarried relationship as well; I don't know, I've never been in one. (Because of the Witness deal, my wife and I married about a year after we started dating.)
2. The law automatically takes care of things like shared property ownership, shared custody of kids, the ability to make medical decisions for each other in case of accident, etc. Without a marriage, those things can require a lot more hassle and paperwork.
3. Possible tax benefits (depending on your relative incomes)
4. Gifts, a party, and maybe even a moving ceremony (if you're into that sort of thing)
Cons
1. Splitting up becomes a pain in the ass. (Then again, if you've been living together for years, splitting up would probably be a pain in the ass anyway. At least with a legal divorce, there are rules to manage the process.)
2. Pressure to commit (if you don't in fact feel ready)
Does that help?

According to Tom Stoppard, the trade-offs are "available sex, versus being able to fart in bed." Your choice.

Cook at home or eat out?
by greendawn indo you know how to cook, even just a few simple recipes, or do you hate the idea of home cooking and prefer to always rely on restaurants and take aways, or just prepare easy snacks like sandwiches and melted cheese on toast?

Jeannie... my dad's trick was to look for where the police ate. Probably not a bad idea.

Let's see my hubby is vegetarian (as am I), is Asian so can't have dairy products, is allergic to mangos, avacados, and papaya, and hates portabello mushrooms. So it's easier for me to make dinner....LOLSo what do you eat? Beans and tofu?

JW's on the news WITH a CROSS
by freedom96 inlast night i posted about the witnesses being on the news with a clip of the assembly in san diego.. well, when the news actually came on at 10, they had a full news segment on the assembly.
quite extensive, and even interviewing the chairman of the convention.. here is the kicker:.
during the entire segment, big bold letters stating jehovah's witnesses.

ROFL I'm sure the station's going to get plenty of mail/calls from the local JWs. I'm just curious to find out whether or not they'll issue an apology.

$4.50 a plate? Where do you live, Jeannie? Here in Boise, even a meal at Burger King costs more than that!
One thing I do miss from NY, however, was the small, immigrant-run take-out places. If you knew the right places, you could get a non-fancy but very tasty dinner for the same price as fast food.
I think cooking is almost always cheaper than take-out if you take into account both quantity and quality. E.g. if you spend the same amount on ingredients as you would to buy the meal in a restaurant, then you'll either a) have leftovers for another night, which means that your actual cost for cooking is half that of eating out, or else b) end up with a much better quality meal. At least, that's my experience.

Other Preachers at my door!
by Odrade inthis little incident cracked me up, thought i'd share... .
we live in a decent neighborhood in suburbia, nearly all of the houses are owned, people mow their own lawns, (well everyone except us!
) two or three cars per family, dogs, kids, etc.

LOL, Odrade! Especially at the transcription...
Katie... for all I know, that could have been the Witnesses. Foreign-language congregations will sometimes do 'surveys'... by which they mean, just knocking on doors looking for people who speak their language.

What was your breaking point?
by soundbox_guy inokay, i'm new as you all probably know, so my question may have been discussed several times in the past.
i'm just curious as to when some of you came to the conclusion that enough was enough and that you didn't want to attend the meetings anymore or not be a jw.
was it in field service, at home, at the hall?

I was always one of the serious dubs... very heavy into doctrine. At first, when I found errors or inconsistencies, I figured they would eventually get cleared up. But as I found more and more problems, it became harder and harder to keep it all together.
The last straw was when I read Ray Franz's book Crisis of Conscience. Ray spoke about 'the myth of the organization'; how many Witnesses hang on, even when they disagree with the religion, because they believe that they need an 'organization'. I realized that was exactly what I was doing, and that I didn't want to do it anymore.

thought civilization had ended when Elvis the Pelvis appeared on the Hit Parade! So anything loud with screaming guitar was unthinkingly dissed.
ROFL Ann! We had a couple of 20-something Bethelites who would give those talks; they were actually really cool guys when they weren't on stage.

Loesch is a Neanderthal... I couldn't stand him even when I was a dub. He did the daily text at a Circuit Assembly once; went into a rant about "lazy" sisters not getting up in the morning to make their husbands breakfast. This was in an urban NY circuit where almost all the wives had to work full-time (not to mention the many single moms).
