Losing Faith in Faith..

i came across this lecture at 3am not being able to sleep by dan baker.

it details his transition from christian fundamentalist to atheist and the various shades in-between.

he realises that every denomination of christian can open the bible and prove to you that they have the right interpretation and everyone else is wrong.

I understand what your saying dismember because I have some of the same thoughts. How can we believe in what can't be proved (or possibly what could be proved, if God made a way)? And even if we could figure out what is in fact truth, where are similar, like-minded people to associate with. Sometimes I think it was better being oblivious to these simple truths. At least back then, I thought I was happy.

Now, if you make yourself truly known, our loved ones think we have gone crazy, gone off the deep end, or are being controlled by Satan and his demons. They don't really understand the true issues at hand. And if they did, they would no doubt be just as messed up as some of us are.

The elders are 'letting me fade'

i attended my last meeting in january 2014, having realised that i'd been lied to for 20+ years (i'm now 43 y/o).

rumours spread of my 'apostasy'.. in may, cobe contacted me inviting me to a private meeting with elders at the kh.

(no mention of the meeting being a jc).

if you were a lady and you were 55 and had $5,000 or less to spend on a used car, what would buy?

top concerns: good mpg; reliable; in not having major issues like ball joints breaking, timing belts breaking, etc.

not too expensive to maintain.

Your thoughts on demons, ghosts and spirits

as a jw were taught all about demons but i never had an incident.

my wife believes wholeheartedly says her family including her has had problems with them.

i have met people that even non religious people that say they have experienced a ghost or a spirit.

I am open to the idea of evil spirits if conclusive proof were given, just as I'm open to the idea of God, but faith in such an idea is quickly waning.

My honest thoughts..... I believe that we attribute what we don't understand in the world to be something that they are not. For instance, it was once thought that someone who was schizophrenic had demons. We know now this to be a mental illness. For people that lived before this illness was discovered, these people were downright scary and still can be today. However, we no longer attribute this illness to demons.

I do believe that there is supernatural phenomena, but we are not classifying it correctly due to an incomplete understanding. I believe that as science progresses and the tools are made available to properly measure and understand these phenomena, we will see these for what they are, explainable facts of life. In time we will see these not as malevolent or benevolent spirits, but will see them for what they are.

Of course, these phenomena can often be exaggerated by our own imagination, sleep deprevation, mental illness, preconceived notions, etc. to the point that we believe we have seen or experienced something we can not.

True experience.....

In an effort to prove the existence of God, I tried to prove the existence of the demons since God would never answer me. As an eight year old, I cried out to Satan that I would devote my life to him for one supernatural experience...... floating. Satan missed an easy opportunity to have a devoted follower. As an adult, I spent time in a graveyard at night firing off fireworks, the supposed lurking place of demons and spirits...... not one supernatural experience. Maybe they were scared of fireworks? Anyways, in my life, I've made it easy to have an experience that others have "supposedly" had, but to no avail from either side of the forces of good or evil.

I'veBeenScrewed (We all have, and nice play on words. ), Excellent write-up of your story. I'm looking forward to reading part 5. I just got caught up with the first three parts. It's amazing how all our stories have common elements. Even on parts of my life that haven't happened, I can easily see them playing out the same way as yours. It's encouraging to read what you've dealt with, how you handled it, and how you're moving on. Please keep it coming.

Bigmac, without a doubt, you're right. But it's losses like that which is the reason I've still got one foot in the door. I'm slowly fading, and thankfully as I fade away, my wife isn't nearly as zealous as she used to be. At some point, I'll share what I've been learning. So far I haven't been out in service this year; my wife has went two or three times. I haven't been to a congregation meeting in a month thanks to my wife being sick, and since she's been sick, she hasn't either. I'm thinking that pretty soon will be a good time to begin talking to her since we've both been away from the indoctrination for a bit (except for the RC last week).

What would be your favorite job if you could do anything.?

on the basis that most of us realise the w.t wasnt really the best " job" or way to spend our days, it would be fun to find out what people would really have liked to have done with there lifes and if this is still possible.

or maybe its not even a very realistic ambition just a dream.

in my dreams i stay at home all day and make a living from being a professional artist.maybe i need a phycholgist?.

Realistically, I'd like to be a stunt car driver. I've always wanted to drive the hell out of a car without concern for tearing it up or the cost of repairs. I could see myself doing that for a living.

I'd lose my mom and my sister. My dad would probably be co-ercered into shunning me (to keep peace in the marriage), even though he isn't baptized. I'd lose my life-long best friend, and I'd lose my wife. In a nutshell, everyone I care about. It scares the hell out of me. That may not seem like much, but its everyone that I have. To me, its the type of loss nightmares are made of.
