"But the Basics haven't changed"
by Phizzy ina couple of days ago in town i met a jw guy i have known since he was a kid in diapers, he is now an elder and must be 40 yrs old, still a kid to me, though.. he gave me the spiel about "we would love to see you come back " , i said that i could not come back to the religion i had left as it no longer existed (a line i got from my friend bill), this elder replied that there "had been changes, but the basics remain the same".. i just was not quick enough with this one, i just sort of nodded at that and went on about what i simply could not swallow as "truth".
overlapping generation etc etc.. what he was meaning by the basics being the same is that nothing has changed on the "what jw's don't believe in" front, i.e trinity, immortal soul etc.
the reality it is that the basics of jw/wt teachings about what they do believe in have all changed !.

Have JWs kept any of the doctrines they had in 1919?
Apart from an emphasis on using the name Jehovah to refer to god I can't think of any?

Any ideas for my return visit?
by KateWild ini had a really fun day today.
i went to town on first call to witness to the jws on the trolley outside the main train station in the city.
i had prepared two different presentations depending on whether or not the jws knew me.. if they knew me i planned to tell them how unjust my last jc was and that i didn't believe jehovah cared about me or anyone, and if they didin't know me i would just question them about their disfellowshipping policy.

Hi Kate
Glad you had a good day, I saw some JWs outside a train station when I was in your city in March, I wondered if they knew you. I was with my JW parents who stopped to talk to them, I thought it best to stay quiet.
It sounds like you're a minor celebrity now! I suspect there's been more than a few lies said about you, good to set the record straight!

I paid little attention and went back to reading my book (catch-22 - thanks frazzled ) and when I next looked up I spotted that the same JW had flicked over to watching a video of a woman giving birth.
I kid you not. I'm also skipping breakfast, and maybe lunch.

One thing about this site that bothers me
by keyser soze inthe constant references to 'window washers' as something derogatory.. i understand the context of it-that most jws are uneducated, and unqualified to do much more.
but sometimes the references seem snobbish, almost mean-spirited.
one poster, on another thread, essentially referred to window washers as 'losers'.
-
Laika
I might be paranoid but I swear JWs used to look down on me for working in an investment bank.
Some of the JW window washers I knew were quite wealthy. I knew one guy who supported his wife and pioneering with just 1 days work washing windows. Amazing.

Lifting the Veil on "Islamophobia"
by cofty inthe late christopher hitchens decribed the word islamophobia as "created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons.. please take half an hour to read a fascinating conversation between sam harris and ayaan hirsi ali.. ayaan is an apostate from islam.
she fled to the netherlands in '92 to escape an arranged marriage and went on to become a member of the dutch government from 2003-2006.. ayaan is now a fellow with the future of diplomacy project at the belfer center for science and international affairs at the harvard kennedy school... she lives with round-the-clock security.. "some moderate muslims hate meand yes, thats a strong word, but i think what theyve said supports itbecause i make them feel uncomfortable.
the things i talk about put them in a state of dissonance that they cant live with.

The reason interview is a little bit mental, she's like Islam's own Danny Haszard.

I don't feel angry anymore.
by quellycatface inafter.14 years of being a jw, fading from 2006 and da'ing in december, i no longer feel anger for the things i experienced.. i do however, feel for others who are hurting because of the wtbs.
broken families, child abuse etc....i feel anger for their pain.. i think i'm healing.
i also love god and jesus in a better way.. i hope all those hurting get their healing real soon too..
-
Laika
I find my anger sort of ebbs and flows. When I think about it too much I'm peed off that people I loved have gone out of their way to hurt me for having different opinions.
Pleased for you though, Quelly.

If your not baptized in the name of the father, son and holy spirit. was your baptism official
by goingthruthemotions inmatt 28:19 "go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit,.
i don't ever remember hearing at my baptism nor any other baptism of a jw.
the person giving the baptism talk or person doing the dunking saying that i/we are baptized in the name of the father, son and holy spirit.. so i have come to the conclusion that my/our baptism's are not official.

It's sort of funny that JWs claim they're the only group fulfilling this scripture when they're one of the very few 'christian' groups who don't use this baptism formula.
I think the bigger problem with JW baptism is the way they use it as a control device.
