Two Elders Stopped By
by rocketman intwo elders approached me yesterday afternoon while i was doing a bit of work on my car.
unsuccessful at reaching me in my home (mostly because i don't answer the doorbell when they come) they saw me outside and decided to stop to talk.
the conversation did not go especially well.

Belief-O-Matic says I'm a Mormon
by rocketman ini took the "belief-o-matic" survey at beliefnet yesterday, and it looks like i am a mormon.
the survey matches your beliefs on various matters to the creeds of the world's religions and assigns a percentage.

Catholic "Just War" Doctrine vs JW Pacifist Doctrine
by rocketman inhaving been a practicing jehovah's witness for 30 years, i had been exposed to their pacifist doctrine, which taught that christians were not to enlist in armies or participate in warfare on any level.
this doctrine was later modified somewhat to allow for non-military "alternative" service as a matter of conscience.. i had always thought of the jw doctrine as lofty.
it was based on bible verses such as isaiah 2:4 and matthew 26:52. the idea was that, if all people were jehovah's witnesses, carnal warfare would be eliminated.

Myths
by rocketman inlast night, abc tv's 20/20 aired a one-hour segment entitled "lies, myths, and downright stupidity", hosted by john stossel.
the intent of the program was to prove that certain commonly held beliefs (such as the myth that exposure to cold makes one catch a cold) are untrue.. listed as the number one myth was: "life is getting worse", a look at the common notion that the world has continually become worse as a place to live.
evidence was presented that debunks this claim, such as:.

Proof of a God of Love?
by rocketman ingregg easterbrook's tuesday morning quarterback column (now found at nfl.com) occasionally tackles subjects other than football, since easterbrook is a religion writer as well.
in this week's column, easterbrook maintains that the human body's release of large quantities of endorphins upon death is proof that there is a benevolent god.. he writes that god is sparing us from an unpleasant, horrible experience by such action, and that darwinian evolution has no explanation for such an occurance.
he reasons that a pleasant feeling at death has no evolutionary advantage over an unpleasant feeling upon dying.. i won't argue the point either way here other than to say that if easterbrook is correct, then god created us to die.

Sox, Cubs......I Believe
by rocketman ini believe in curses.
the billygoat.
the bambino.. the sox just lost to the yankees 6-5 after leading by three in the 8th.. we all know what happened to the cubs.. and i believe in the rally monkey too, from last year's angels (though i guess he's looking for work these days, poor little fella).. this is all in kidding, but it does make me wonder.....are some teams "cursed"?
