Life is short and I'm gonna love it thread!
by poopsiecakes inso what are you doing to enjoy yourself?
doesn't have to be for anyone around you, or have anything to do with jw world.
just something that you do for you and only you and that fills your soul (whatever that means).

Traveling. Other countries and cultures. Expanding horizens and learning how people live in other parts of the world, and coming to appreciate them.
Partake in certain holidays, like Halloween. Don't really care about religious holidays like Xmas or Easter, but I do like Xmas lights, parties and the holiday spirit, so I go to the parties and wish everyone a Merry Xmas. And the booze is fun too.
Enjoying friendship with people who don't have a JW background. Amazing how 'normal', and well adjusted most of these people are.
Sleeping in on Saturdays, and then relaxing in a coffee shop mid morning, watching dubs come in all dressed up. It brings a moment of satisfaction to the revenge of living well and not having to serve a religious publication company.
Sleeping in on Sundays, and cooking breakfast for the family, and relaxing for a bit.
Visiting wineries, or brew pubs on Sundays, and watching NFL football, not having to get dressed up and sit in a stuffy building, or knock on doors, peddling magazines.
Watching any movie/TV show that intersts me without having to worry about the rating, or 'stumbling' 'weaker' dumb dubs
Same for reading material, especially books on history, world events, personalities and ideas.
Live music shows. Not just large concerts of major artists, but local bars/clubs watching local bands, regional bands, and underground artists.
I've experimented in, um, substances, and finally found my groove on my favorite way to unwind, which after experimentation I realized I do not need illegal vices, but does consists of a wide array of brewed, fermented, or distilled beverages. Oh wait... some of those distilled beverages are illegal...
... and lest I forget:

The REAL purpose of the new 1914 explanation video...
by Calebs Airplane inwhen a dub starts to question an elder about this doctrine (at the kh, field circus or wherever), the elder will only need to utter these words: "just watch the video".... .

"For example, the Bible does not support creationism. It does not state that the earth was created in six literal 24-hour days"
Ah, good ole WT juke and jive. They try so hard to distance themselves from loopy creationists who believe the earth is less than 10,000 years old, yet per their still official (never recanted in print) doctrine, each creative day is 7000 years each.
Exodus 20:11 says that the heavens and earth were created in six days. If each creative day is 7,000 years each per WT dogma, the heavens and earth would be less than 50,000 years old.
The difference between 6000 and 50000 is miniscule when comparing 6000 or 50000 vs 13.8 billion. They don't want to be lumped in with creationists, yet they are exactly that.

Awake January 2015: How did life begin? - More misquotes
by Designer Stubble in
some might assume that a scientifically-minded person would pick evolution and that a religious person would pick creation.
but not always.. rama singh, professor of biology at canadas mcmaster university, says: the opposition to evolution goes beyond religious fundamentalism and includes a great many people from educated sections of the population.
.
end-of-quote in awake.

how do you continue as an elder? You certainly are not misled and I understand the family situation, but how can you continue as an elder knowing what you know?
You heard of the French Resistance during WWII, right? Though occupied by the Nazis, many French continued their daily lives, making a show of obeying their new rulers, while behind the scenes working with the Allies to disrupt anything Nazi related. Some were armed and ready to fight, while others were more of an underground press, distributing news and creating passage for people to escape the Nazis.
While up front guerrilla warfare is pointless with the WTS, an underground free press, so to speak, as provider of accurate information about the enemy, can help people tunnel their way free of the oppressors. Even if it's only to free your immediate family, it may well be worth the effort to stay underground, working against the WTS' efforts to rule your family.

Purging and letting go of the past
by Skinnedsheep inmy wife and i decided that today would be the day that we would let go of the past.
we collected all of our watchtower published books and brochures and threw them out.
it was honestly bitter sweet to toss our old pioneer books, marked up insight books, and notes from 25 years of conventions.

Got rid of all the books, but wish I had kept a few of them, just to throw stupid JW failed chronology in some faces. But, otoh, I've picked up a ton of library space for more interesting material, that I'm not ashamed to be seen by visitors.
It takes time, but eventually your new, free, life style eclipses the old JW life. I don't miss the people, don't miss the very, very, few good times. It was all fake anyway. You were only accepted as long as you obeyed and remained loyal to the organization.

Inconsistency in JW logic:
When dub kids become teenagers, they're pressured to get baptized. Not as adults, not in high school, but before they get their driver's license. When you listen to the speaker at the dedication talk, he will invariably tell the audience that this is the single most important decision a person will make in their life. And on that odd occasion when some little precocious brat gets baptized, everyone just carries on as if it were Jesus himself...oh wait... he was 30. Nevermind.
But when that same 13 year old that was pressured to get baptized decides to get married at age 18, every JW adult in the county tells them they're too young to make that kind of decision.
So, which is it? You're mature enough at 13 to make the most important decision of your life, or you're not. If you were praised for making the right decision at 13, shouldn't you be trusted to make an informed decision 5 years more mature and wiser?

The subliminal message is just as bad as the obvious one...
Note how the groups mostly overlap. The 'newer' group is shown coming on the scene not that much behind 1914. The distance between the end of the first group, and the second group crossing the line is not that far apart.
Considering that the 1914 generation was basically rendered gone by the first of the century, then the scale of this graph gives the subliminal message that the end is very close.

A question for my friends in the USA about cowboys.
by punkofnice inas a kid growing up in the uk we used to play 'cowboys and indians' and watch high chaparal and bonanza along with other cowboy films.
later, in the 70's kung fu would be shown with caine going through the 'old west'.
we even had a chocolate bar that was marketed with a 'cowboy' theme...milky bar.. as far as i know the 'wild west' as shown on tvdidn't actually exist.. are there people that believe it did?.

Don't forget the oulaw 'Cowboys' of Arizona during the Wyatt Earp years...
The movies about Earps/Tombstone/etc make for good theater, but really gloss over a lot of the background and politics of the Earp/Clanton fight. The real story is actually more fascinating than just the shootout at OK Corral
