  What do you buy a 5 year old?

  my little niece is turning 5 soon and i'd like to buy her something special.

  something that will stay with her for a while.. any ideas?

  When my oldest granddaughter was an infant, I bought her a neat little wooden trinket box, that I keep at my house and put little 'treasures' in. A ring, a necklace, bracelet, etc. Now I have one for my other granddaughter and grandson too. I told them that they could have their boxes when they're 13. This way I know that there's a chance that they will keep anything I give them that I really want them to keep.

  For birthdays and holidays, I pretty much stick to the basic stuff...Barbie and whatever sport my grandson is into that week. :0)

  My sister in law likes to get my daughter the 'special edition' Barbies for her birthday. I try to get her to take good care of them...

  Shelby's telling the truth. There are other people who 'hear' and 'see'. I had an experience too, before I became a witness. I was drawn to them because they seemed to have an explanation for it. I soon found out that I would be best to 'deny' what had happened to me. I think I only told one couple before I left, and I was still confused about it.

  I'm not confused anymore.

  The WTS creates doubt in people who need faith. They suck big time.

  "Social Retardation"

  question for those who were raised as jws.....after you left, especially if as an adult, did you ever feel like you were "socially retarded"?

  i was married twice to jws, yet when i was single again as an xjw, i really felt like i didn't know how to get to know someone of the opposite sex, how to date, what to do or not do, what to expect or not expect.

  my ex-husband talked to me the other day and he stated the same thing.

  From the other side of the coin, I wasn't raised to be a JW, but I come from a 'disfunctional family' and I always felt socially retarded as a teen. I don't know that being unequipped to deal with the world is something exclusive to JW's. I know it isn't, but the 'other' social retards seem to be who JW's attract, so you may be onto something. LOL

  my boyfriends uncle just died this morning.

  it was his late fathers brother, and the only relative left on that side of the family.

  he is upset, but also trying to play the responsible role and not show too much emotion.

  Hi! I'm sorry for your boyfriends loss. Is he a JW or an exJW? I just ask because if he's an exJW and you opt to go with him, he may be shunned if it's a JW funeral.

  Anyway, I think that if you care about him, it would be ok for you to go to the funeral with him. Just being there with him, and maybe making small talk with other people, you know...just being there should be enough.

  If he's an exJW, the experience might be a bit odd, but I'm sure there are people here that have some knowledge about that subject.

  Babette's Feast

  interesting movie that culminates with babette cooking a sumptuous meal for a group of devout christians who feel guilty about enjoying anything because of the sinful nature of enjoyment and their fear that enjoyment of life now will diminish their eternal reward so they vow to each other not to show any signs that they are enjoying the meal.. i saw it the other night and it always reminds me of the witnesses i knew back in the 60s.

  Joel, I've never seen "Babette's Feast", but the name Babette reminds me of an excellent book I once read called "Malevil". I can't for the life of me remember who wrote it, but it's about the 'end of the world' and some of the survivors in a small village in France. I highly recommend it, although it does get a bit wordy at times.

  Need Help! About Blood Transfusion

  not too long ago i read a news story on this forum about deaths due to medical errors in australian hospitals.

  i think it had something to do with statistics generated by some minister in a department of health in australia.

  part of the article cited numbers of deaths (or errors) due to blood transfusions and a conclusion that transfusions were given more often then medically necessary.

  Yes, if it's the same one, it's Feb. 22, in the Watching the World section, under the heading Blood Transfusion Dangers.

  It says: "about 18,000 (Australians) a year died as a result of complications they developed directly as a result of the medical treatment they received."

  This doesn't say from 'blood transfusions' although this is implied by the direction of the article. This appears to be misleading.
