Shunning: How would You Overcome it?

after reading the thread soon to be 18 and quit speaking to her mother- suggestions?, i started thinking of how to use the wtbts's doctrine to help jws to see what is the real purpose of shunning for the wtbts.

hopefully, some good ideas will be posted to this thread and may help exjws and jws to maintain relationships with each other instead of shunning the non-jws.. how would a jw react to the following?.

do christians shun or not associate with non-jws to help non-jws believe that the wtbts has the "truth", to keep the cong clean of non-believers, or to not be shunned?

You overcome it by not participating in it. They are the ones required by the WTS to shun ex-JWs and there ought to be consequences for such behaviour. The opposite (ex-JWs shunning JWs) is not a requirement - to do so would be to endorse the behaviour and participate in it, and even worse, it endorses the WTS's claim of authority over the ex-JW.

They want to shun you and your spouse, the parents of your children? Then they don't get the privilege of associating with your children and being allowed to treat their ex-JW parent with disrespect (and thereby set an example of disrespecting their parents). If they want to have their grandchildren / nieces / nephews in their lives, they have to behave in a manner that sets an example of acceptance, love and tolerance of everyone, including people whose opinion on religious matters differs from their own.

strangely enough, jesus never warned that "there will be wars and rumors of wars, but if the yellowstone caldera blows, we're toast.".

...and jesus' composite bride through the pages of the watchtower, never suggested that deeply-dipped dubs ought to move out of the area downwind of yellowstone, lest they be transformed in the twinkling of an eye into crispy monoliths.. but up here in the uadna orbiting space platform, things are different.

My brother died yesterday

"albert" was 55 years old, and the fifth-born of seven children.

i am the second oldest and babysat him often while he was growing up --- and while i was still at home.. yesterday, albert was out taking his usual morning stroll around his small town, when he collapsed on the sidewalk.

the doctors said it was a heart attack.

Ladies, How Big Is Your Diamond Engagement Ring?

i notice a trend that suggests that many ladies either have a one carat or bigger diamond ring or much smaller if any.. do you have a diamond ring and if you do, what size carat is it?

The old fashioned way of deciding how much to pay for an engagement ring was two months' the gentleman's salary. Then it went to three months.

It seems to have evolved into much more than that. Personally, I don't like big flashy or gaudy jewellry - I prefer understated and elegant.

You in the market for one, minimus?

To answer your question, mine is a small cluster, probably no more than 0.2 ct. I love it.

The Gall Of WT To Give This Advice To Pioneers:

this past week's wt study lesson was entitled: 'pioneering strengthens our relationship with god'.. under the subheading 'remaining in the full-time service' in par 14 the wt has the nerve to give this admonition to pioneers: .

'desiring to learn from jesus' example, a pioneer does well to keep in mind that the more material things he has, the more he will have to maintain , repair, or replace.'.

i don't think the gb or anyone in the writing department has the freedom to speak on giving adivce on the matter of 'material things' given the fact that wt has close to a billion dollars in real estate and loads of money in various bank accounts; given the fact that gb is currently building themselves new living quarters with who knows what sort of comforts and other amenities.

Considering the individuals in the Writing Department™ have *everything* provided for them, I agree that it's incredibly nervy of them to try to lecture Pioneers™ about enjoying the material things they have - and likely scrimped and saved for - especially when most of them followed the Writing Department™'s advice to stay away from higher education in order to enjoy a better standard of living.

i was angry with my kid for questioning me.

With remarks like the one you threw at your kid, is it any wonder that he has "attitude"?

Look at it another way. Suppose after saying that to your child, something awful happened, like him getting killed in a car accident. Are those really the last words you'd want him to hear from you?

Apologize.

You're the grown up. You're supposed to know better, and you're supposed to set the example for appropriate behaviour. Show him what that looks like so that he can learn from you.

How can I stay motivated for field ministry?

Perhaps he needs to be reminded of the old adage: Insanity is when you keep doing the same thing, but expect different results.

Does he get the kind of "results" that the WTS tells him he'll have? Magazine Placements™, Bible Studies™, new ones being recruited? The WTS wants him to believe that the reason he doesn't succeed is because of a flaw in himself, when in reality, the flaw is in the methodology. How many successful businesses utilize door-to-door sales anymore? The fact of the matter is that the Field Ministry™ is, by and large, an ineffective recruitment tool, just as ineffective as cold calling done by telemarketers.

If he wants to think of Field Ministry™ as a way to spend time with fellow believers and reinforce each other's delusion while cooped up in a crowded vehicle between territories or over coffee break, that's one thing. But if he's looking for a way to become more successful at it (as defined by the WTS) he's likely to become less motivated and less satisfied.

Perhaps he needs to redefine what "success" means when it comes to the Door-to-Door™ work, and have it be his definition, not theirs.
