  Counting Time... Is It Part Of The Rot?

  how many here have pioneered?.

  be honest, what was predominantly on your mind, telling people this wonderfull good news or was it counting time?.

  an elder once said to me, "you know, it's strange how when pioneers quit pioneering, they're hours don't stay the same, they don't gradually diminish and they don't even drop by half... they drop practically to nothing.".

  I also pioneered back in the days of 100 hours per month. I'm with Farkel on the coffee/donut break. It was a regular part of our pioneer day and the best part (except for working in Mission Beach in the summer time!). Our favorite place was a little shop called Linda's Donuts in Pacific Beach. I wonder if it's still there?

  Looking back, pioneering was mostly drudgery. I was deleted for failing to make my hours. I was averaging about 90 per month when I was deleted, six weeks later at the district assembly they announced that they were lowering the requirement to 90 per month. I like to think I helped contribute to that change!

  The WT has for many years tried to gain a great deal of sympathy for the jailing of its leaders in 1918 in the USA. The average witness might get the impression that they were singled out for special persecution. But anyone familiar with history knows that a great many "dissidents" were jailed in the USA during the Great War. In fact US Attorney General Palmer used the pretext of the War to wipe out the socialist movement in this country. He jailed Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist Party candidate for president in 1916. The violations of human rights done in the name of the war by President Wilson and Attorney General Palmer is one of the darker parts of US history. Let's hope in the current environment we don't see a repeat!

  San Diego, CA October 7 Supplementary Meeting

  word began circulating yesterday that the october 7th event scheduled for qualcomm stadium (where chargers football team plays) might be cancelled due to problems already created by nfl's need to re-schedule aborted games as a result of terrorist attacks.

  mind you, there has been no official announcement but word is circulating---not among r&f but among elders who, of course, are yakking.. odd, i recall a time when the society was so efficient that it would've already arranged for and been announcing contingency plans and replacement locations before any such buzz could hit the streets---especially since the event is less than 2 weeks away and many have had to make out-of-town lodging arrangements.. this being reported anywhere else as yet?.

  Farkel, I thought you lived in OB! That is further than two miles from the Q! I used to live in La Mirage at the corner of I-15 and Friars Rd, up on the hill. It was great for watching the Sky Show. Now I no longer live in San Diego, but I work next store to that Mira Loma Assembly Hall. Small world.

  no doubt you are familiar with the practice of many popular magazines to print selected extracts from their issues 25, 50 or 100 years ago.

  (scientific american goes back 150 years).

  what is interesting is the ideas presented then, sometimes they are fanciful and just plain wrong.

  perhaps you recall the instance in the bible where samson made a wager with the philistines that they couldnt guess his riddle.

  as it turned out they wheedled the answer out of him by his fiancee, but the point is that they had a wager.

  since the underlying assumption of the apostasy is that we are not living in the last days of this system of things, and that this world is not facing anything remotely like the biblical apocalypse, at least not any time soon, in the spirit of such antagonism, i would like to propose a similar wager.

  I've always loved the WT use of the word "worldling." It sounds so cultish. I understand however that this usage is no longer part of the "Pure Language" (another classic!). Can someone confirm this for me?

  I enjoyed all your quotes lifted from WT publications "proving that 1914 is the beginning of the last days." That one from the Seattle Times in 1959 was really good -- I mean everyone knows that the Seattle Times is the ultimate historical authority! How come that one sentence was broken up twice with the three little dots? What does that mean?

  Also why didn't you include some quotes from one of my favorite books, "Famine -- 1975?" Also how about some stuff from Dr. Paul Ehrlich -- he's really gloomy! All that stuff about 1914 must be true or it wouldn't have been printed in the newspaper. I believe everything I read in the NY Times!

  In regard to why the population has increased so much in the past century: population growth is described by an expotential function, not a linear function. I realize that them's some pretty big words for a window washer so I'll try to make it simple: the population is getting bigger cause it's supposed to!

  I tend to agree that America has injected itself far too often in other countries affairs. This is part of the American mindset which has existed for a long time. Remember it was Woodrow Wilson who when asked why we invaded one of our Latin American neighbors replied that we needed to teach them to elect "good men" (ostensibly those whom we approved of). The American sense of specialness has contributed to among other things the creation of religions like the WT.
  The result of our attitude is a mixture of resentment and envy in much of the world. I reminded of something that the American humorist P. J. O'Rourke wrote back in the eighties: O'Rourke was interviewing a group of Arab men in Lebanon who went on at length about how much they hated the US. However at the end of the diatribe they all asked O'Rourke if he knew how they could get a green card!

  You see the primary thing needed was not a large defense budget, but hatred in the hearts of the killers. I've heard alot in the past two days how nothing will ever be the same again. Really nothing has changed since the days of Cain and Abel. What happened yesterday has been happening for a long time and will continue to happen in the future. We all want the terrorists who did this to be executed. But if they are killed there will be ten more to take their places.

  There is no solution that can be devised by man. As long as man hates then man will kill.

  as i was in the dentists chair this morning, i got the news and my heart just sank.

  i think of all those poor people and their grieving families, and my heart goes out to them.. well, you know, i have to say this: ....my money is on you.. i think you nailed it this time.... what is the verse about them "growing faint out of fear"???.

  all i can say is..stay tuned.....you guys ain't seen nothing yet..... the fun begins when the terrorists are identified and recompense is sought by the united states.. oh, and not to mention the ramifications in the global markets..... yep, like i said folks...."welcome to the gt.....and the finale is the big a"... this is a day that will go down in world history.. chipster
