So my husband ( who is a baptised witness who no longer attends meetings and pretty much doesn't believe any more ) asked me last night why do so many ex-jw's feel the need to keep talking about the religion even when they have been out of it for years. I told him that in my case I still talk about it because I feel I lost so much of my life to them and I am still upset about it. Also that many people have lost families and livlihoods, etc. And many people still have family in that they wish they could get out. I was just wondering why many here still keep talking about it so many years later. I will pass it along to him so he gets a better understanding of why it has affected so many people so deeply.

Should Immigrants Be Made To Learn English If They're Living In The USA?
by minimus inwhaddya think?

minimus are you in New Englad? Because I am in MA and I keep seeing some political ad from NH with some dude in a classroom talking about making everyone speak English. I can understand the frustration with expecting everyone here to speak English, after all it is the official language of our country. But to force? Some people are fleeing their country because of abuse and such. I don't feel it is up to us to force them in their already stressed out state to learn our language. Should they? Yes, I would suggest it. It would make their lives that much easier. Forced to by the government? Don't think so.

sad but true.
Witnesses always feel better by putting others down. God forbid you try to help those more unfortunate than yourself.

My friend and I were about 16 and were at a door that only had the screen door shut, so we could see right into the house. We kept knocking but there was no answer. We went to turn around and leave and heard a noise. We looked just in time to see a naked guy coming out of the bathroom. We kinda froze, as did he. Then he just bolted down the hallway. We got away from that door fast, lol.
Another time I was working with an elder and we were standing on steep stairs, with me a couple steps behind him. Unfortunately this put me at eye level with his backside. It looked as though he had sat in a pile of melted crayons because there was a huge multi-colored stain on his backside. I wasn't quite sure how to go about telling him that he had a huge stain on his butt. I didn't want him to think I made it a habit of staring at elders bums, but I couldn't let him keep walking around like that. Finally I just asked him if he sat in melted crayons and he asked why? I then proceeded to tell him about the stain, lol. I think he was glad I told him.
Another time I was working with a bunch of brothers and I went to get out of the car and my skirt split straight up the side, all the way to the waist. I had to borrow one of the brothers jackets to wrap around myself until they could drive me to my house to change! Seems wardrobe mishaps are my claim to fame in the field service stories!

How squeamish are you?
by Gregor inlets say you are enjoying a glass of good red wine while preparing dinner.
you pick up your glass for a sip and see a gnat floating on top.
1. pour the whole thing in the sink and pour a fresh one.. 2. pick out the gnat and drink the wine.. 3. ignore it and drink the wine and the gnat.. i am a 2. i have done a 3 and it didn't spoil my appetite.. .

I wouldn't be drinking red wine, but if it was a nice pinot or chardonnay I would be 2. Why waste a good glass of wine? I have picked fruit flies out of a glass and I am still living.

They mention JW's in passing. Funny skit though. It's about 4 minutes long.

Natick, MA Assembly Hall
by Eiben Scrood ini have a lot of memories of attending assemblies there for 30 years.
does anyone remember all the purple coloring?
remember that guy who used to wave a stick like he was conducting an orchestra except there was no orchestra, only a guy playing the piano and the audience singing?.

Ha! I loved that assembly hall. It had the prettiest baptism pool ( which is where I got baptised ). I remember we had to check coats in. I remember the ice cream too! I always wanted to hang out in the cafeteria during the talks but there was no way my mom would let me. As an adult when I had kids I would go in there, but by then it had lost its allure. Actually when my son was two he slid off one of the tables ( which had no backs ) and hit his head on the metal on the bottom of the table behind us and we had to take him to the hospital to get stitches!
I also remember they piped in the talks and such into the bathrooms so you wouldn't miss a thing. It was really awkward when you were peeing and midstream they started to say a prayer! And I remember the conductor who had no orchestra too! And the lady who played the piano. I haven't stepped foot in that place in over 10 years, but the memories still stay with me to this day!

POLL Do you think the average JW is happy?
by aSphereisnotaCircle in.
.
i noticed on another thread a poster stating that he felt that unhappy jw's were in the minority.. .

I think your average JW thinks they're happy, because if they're not, then their doing something wrong, because Jehovah's people are supposed to be the "Happy People". They are programmed to believe if they leave they will never truly be happy. I know of a lot of JW's who take anti depressants. If they left, they might find they didn't need them at all.( that's not to say there aren't people who truly are clinically depressed ) I was never happy as a JW, but I always pretended to be. I was a great actor that way. Now that I'm out, I am the happiest person around, and I don't have to fake it!!!

I loved the book. It mirrored my life growing up in the eighties. At times I felt I could be the one writing it. I especially liked the glossary at the end. I'm sure people here could write great books too, but until then, I'll enjoy what's out there.

How did you REALLY feel when you where out in field service?
by megaflower ini never felt comfortable knocking on door and i hoped no one would be home.
my presentation was short and to the point because i did not want to get into discussions.
as we walked from "door to door" i secretly wished i could be like all the ones i saw in the nighborhood.

Oh my. Babygirl and Tuesday had it right about bumping into a schoolmate. That was definately the worse torture ever. Once when out in service with this very social brother named Bob, I made the mistake of saying "hey, there's my next door neighbor Scott!" To which Bob slammed the brakes and rolled down the window and called over to this boy. I was probably 14 at the time, and I just wanted to DIE! I slunk down as far as I could in the seat, but to no avail. Needless to say Scott didn't let me forget about that! Ugh!
