What was your breaking point?

okay, i'm new as you all probably know, so my question may have been discussed several times in the past.

i'm just curious as to when some of you came to the conclusion that enough was enough and that you didn't want to attend the meetings anymore or not be a jw.

was it in field service, at home, at the hall?

Ha! I'm probably the only person that left because of a Walt Disney movie! Call me weird (but not to my face ), but the movie Dinosaurs was the final straw.

I could never reconcile the violence in nature to a "loving" creator. That movie struck me---again---that violence in nature (in the dinosaurs in particular) pre-dated any sin by Adam, since dinosaurs pre-dated, by far, humans (even by the WT's own admission).

Then I started reading books by scientists themselves instead of relying on the WT to filter science to me.

Earthwuake strikes southern California

i just saw this on the news this morning.

a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck southern cal.

i know there are posters on this board from southern cal, wondering if anyone felt it?

i posted this on another thread....but as usual, when i posted it, the thread died and so i thought i'd put it under a different subject as it's worth re-reading.. the society has always said nobody is the judge who commits the dreaded...."unforgivable sin", but they sure the hell do not having any trouble making a statement concerning apostates as commiting the unforgivable sin.. 1982 watchtower 4/1 p.26-28 .

i've been doing some reading about sociopaths or people who have "antisocial personality disorder.

" one book states 1 in 25 people are sociopathic.. this basically means someone without a conscience facility.

someone who cannot empathsize with others.

I just read a book called The Sociopath Next Door (lol, Ignored One's neighbor!) by Martha Stout. It would be possible because 50% of the cause is genetic. Another thing is that Asians have 1/10th the rate of sociopaths as the US. This is attributed to their strong cultural insistence to community and family ties and respect. Beelzebub, good luck with your son. According to my limited reading on it, the trait has to show up by age 15, they get in trouble with the law, and are sexually promiscuous among other traits, in order to be diagnosed as sociopath (APD). Thanks for that article! I just ordered his new book Ancestor Tales and am really looking forward to it. It's written in the style of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Very entertaining, yet educational.

Isn't it miserable to deal with one of these people? Actually, once you're aware of what they are, the general advice seems to be "don't deal with these people!"

Thanks for the info--it sounds interesting and helpful. So you became a Catholic after leaving JWs, I take it. I was raised a Catholic and there are things about it that I enjoyed and kind of miss.

NETFLIX and Documentaries: FYI

i've recently joined netflix and this is an fyi.. they have 2,800 documentaries and include many genres and makers (national geo., bbc, pbs, discovery, imax, etc.).

it's like having a classroom in your living room only better, imo!

i watched the real eve tracing the mitichrondial dna from one woman (not the biblical eve, but one in a group of people that were barely suriving).

Hi Dan,

That reminds me of another characteristic: they seem 50% born that way. Many Asian countries have a tenth the rate of the US and this is attributable to cultures. They strongly encourage family and community ties and this tends to bring a sociopath more in line. But the US has kind of an individualistic style and do-your-own-thing. This is the last thing a sociopath (also called a psychopath too) needs!

One criteria for deciding is that it's obvious in childhood and then they get into trouble in their teen years or are hard to corral. Some are violent, but most are not. They almost never seek therapy, because they don't see a problem.
