I remember meeting Wilbur Ruth when I visited my brother there in the '70s. But I remember his name being pronounced more like Wilmer or Wilmur, rather than Wilbur. Can't say for sure, though.

the people at bethel were killing us spiritually and sometimes they killed us physically too.. many of the old timers were in the infirmary laying there just waiting to die of natural causes.
some had served there for over fifty years.

Russell Family Tree

it's interesting that margaret went on to be a jw (i.e.
stayed with the watchtower organization), whereas mabel, his half-sister, went on to stay with the bible students.it would be very interesting to find the descendants of both margaret and mabel... wondering how many still are bible students / jw's.... .

I think Russell's success was his writing ability. Maybe he didn't have much of an education, but he could write and write clearly in a way that made sense to people. It was all BS, but it read well.

JW critically injured after being electrocuted in assembly hall
by Anders Andersen ina newspaper reports that in bornem, belgium, a jw volunteer was critically injured after being electrocuted:.
bornem - a man was electrocuted while performing maintenance on a high voltage installation in the assembly hall of jw in bornem friday afternoon.
the man was critically injured.. possibly the man, who is a volunteer with the jw, tried to clean the installation with a vacuum cleaner.

In the states they allow pioneers to volunteer to clean or do maintenance at assemby halls, and count their time towards their required hours. It seems likely this guy was doing that too.

Faces on TV Broadcasting
by TheFadingAlbatros ini agree that being photogenic is not given to every ordinary mortal.

but when at the beginning of every new month i am confronted with the various faces of those males showing off as a priority on tv-jw (see jw broadcating september 2017), i am asking myself if i honestly am faced with normal people, or with people who went mental already since ages ago.. is it maybe due to the fact that the majority of them already do not feel anymore like belonging to ordinary mortals ?

Anyone go on a cruise?
by NewYork44M injust finished a 7-day cruise from nyc on norwegian cruise line (ncl- gem).
this is my first cruise in 30 years, so my past experience does not count.. overall, a great experience.
ncl does a great job.

We've been on several, all but one in the Caribbean. My thoughts:
3 days is too short, two weeks too long, 7-10 days about right.
Enjoy the main dining area.
Seek out where the musicians are and at what times. It's surprising how good some of them are.
Spend the money and effort to take excursions in the daytime to see some things in each port. It's cool so get to see so many different things in such a short time.
We haven't been on one in about 5 years, its about time.

ANGOLA - JW Regional Convention target of attack.
by EdenOne inaccording to news sources in luanda, angola (read it here, although it's in portuguese language), a regional convention of the jw's taking place this weekend at the outskirts of capital luanda was targeted yesterday, friday, by what may be described as a 'terrorist attack'.. more than 400 attendees (mostly female) passed out in rapid succession in the vicinity of a toilet at the convention place.
reportedly, toxic gas devices were planted there by 3 young members of unita, the main political party that opposed mpla, the dominant regime party in angola since its independence in 1975.
43 people were rushed to the hospital and a few remain there, under medical surveillance.

I have to wonder about the whole story. In Africa, most toilets are simply pits, and there isnt a sewage system like we take for granted. A few guys pouring something in the toilets is unlikely to make it smell any worse than it already is. I suspect there is a more benign explanation.
