I learned to read at a very young age [before kindergarten] and speak publicly without fear, and utilize research skills to seek out information in support of a given hypothesis. Very useful when you wish to defend a certain idea, ideal, or ideology. I was also taught to dismantle the religious beliefs of others using the bible, which eventually led me to deconstruct my own beliefs using the bible.

What can ex-JWs learn from Harvey Milk?
by zengalileo inif you haven't seen the movie "milk" starring sean penn, or is you have not seen a documentary or read up on harvey milk, then it'll be hard for you to have an opinion on this.. this is not a "gay" thread.
the fact that harvey milk was gay and was a civil rights leadewr for the gay movement has nothing to do with the point i will make here.. harvey milk when he was campaingning for city supervisor for san francisco and fighting against prop 6 in the mid 70s came upon some marketing research that said, where a person actually knows a gay person, they vote favorably towards gay civil rights 2 to 1. this made him come up with his policy that everyone working on his campaign that had not come out as gay to their freinds and family, had to come out.
i'm not sure if there were any consequences if someone just refused to come out; the movie didn't say and neither did the documentary.. .

I'm also a fan of "coming out." I can't tolerate the concept of membership in an organization that stands for ideals that I cannot support. As for those who stay in to "spy" on the WTS... pfft. For what purpose exactly? This isn't a cold war. They have no power, no influence except that exerted on those too weak to separate themselves from the congregation.
Incidentally, my 14 year old son accompanied me to Harvey's and Toad Hall among other places in the Castro with some gay friends in August.

I feel ethically compromised by Rick Fearon being allowed to continue posting here
by sabastious ini'm not entirely sure why, but rick has been the biggest trigger for me.
i have said some very mean things to him that i regret and i apologize to rick for them.
but what he is doing leaves me feeling dirty and i don't even know him.

I find it hilarious how interested many of you are in disfellowshipping someone who doesn't conform to your narrow ideology. How perfectly JW of you!
I have absolutely no clue who Rick Fearon is... I've seen a few of you reference "Six Screens" but I've never been interested enough to look it up.

Any actual Witnesses here?
by trthskr ini found this site hoping to read topics submitted by jw's so i could learn more, but it just seems to be everyone else here except them.
just about every topic and member is just bashing jw's and their teachings.
this site should be renamed "jwbashertrolls.net".

Maybe a troll, maybe not. And I like making fun of someone as much as anyone.
But if anyone here has any interest in actually helping someone to see the real truth about the WTBTS organization, you'd have an easier time reaching them without the bullshit attacks and arrogant comments about shooting fish in barrels. Just sayin...
I'll add my voice to those who would like to see the OP answer Cedars's questions.

As An EXJW Does Christmas Mean Anything To You?
by minimus ini've been thinking how correct the witnesses are regarding an aspect of xmas.
it is totally commercialized and it's big business and materialism.
having said that, i enjoy giving presents and recieving them.

As a born-in JW, now atheist, Christmas as a religious observance has no significance for me whatsoever.
We decorate at my house, but nothing nativity-themed except for stars. I like stars. For some reason we have a lot of really ornate reindeer stuff...
I absolutely despise Christmas music. The only Xmas song I like is All I Want For Christmas is my Methadone by Bob Schneider.

The Watchtower is NOT a false prophet
by The Quiet One inregarding what some have said here about the wt being a false prophet.. i would like to make my point regarding the wt not being a false prophet... so please, if you can be patient enough to read this, at least try to understand what i am getting at.. a false prophet is one who, according to deuteronomy, makes a false prediction of the future and claims that the prediction came from god, or in other words claiming that 'god has said he will do a certain thing at a certain time' etc.. for example, hypothetically speaking, if someone had claimed: "god will bring about the end of the world in 2010", they would have been proven to be a false prophet, obviously.
but, as an example, imagine a man who claimed the position of a prophet of god, (as moses did, because although he was not the type of prophet that predicted the future.. he was still a prophet or spokesman for god) and that he had publicised worldwide, according to his interpretation of a (for example) prophecy found in the book of isaiah, that the world would end in 2010.. and he had also stated that he was not saying that god will end the world in that year.. but only that there was biblical evidence that god might do so.
that would clearly have been a mistake.

I've been out for over 10 years, so I'm very new to the overlapping generations teaching. But just a couple of brief points I didn't notice anyone else make.
dictionary.com offers FIVE possible definitions of the word "generation" as follows:
gen·er·a·tion
noun 1. theentire body of individuals born and living at about the sametime: the postwar generation. 2. thetermofyears, roughly 30 among human beings, accepted as theaverage period between the birth of parents and the birth oftheiroffspring. 3. a group of individuals, most of whom are the same approximate age, havingsimilar ideas, problems, attitudes, etc. Compare Beat Generation , Lost Generation . 4. a group of individuals belongingtoa specific category at the same time: Chaplin belonged to the generation of silent-screen stars. 5. a single step in natural descent , as of human beings, animals, or plants.
The examples offer clues to the appropriate interpretation of each definition, the "postwar generation" the "Beat Generation" or the "generation of silent-screen stars." No where is an interpretation that permits such a broad understanding of the word as is required by the WT's assertion.
Again... from dictionary.com, we have THREE possible definitions of "contemporary" as follows:
con·tem·po·rar·y
1. existing, occurring, or living at the same time; belonging to the same time: Newton's discovery of the calculus was contemporary with that of Leibniz. 2. of aboutthe same age or date: a Georgian table with a contemporarywigstand. 3. of the presenttime; modern: a lecture on the contemporary novel.
The WT and TQO argue that the first definition here fits their need. But the example offered by Dictionary.com is rather telling. Newton was born in 1643 and Leibniz in 1646, they are not only contemporaries but of the same generation by most every definition. Part 2 of the example is of the discovery of infinitesimal calculus. Leibniz claims to have made his breakthrough Nov 11, 1675; and Newton somewhere between 1666 and 1669, dependant upon who you ask.
No part of this example, or any of the available definitions for either word allow for the singular "generation" or "contemporary" to encompass multiple CENTURIES!
To interpret them as the WT and Mr. Quiet One suggest requires a suspension of reason and an incredibly imaginative definition of "generation".

So my JW wife cheated on me. Need some help or at least a sympathetic ear.

Of course it isn't about me, Sizemik. But JonathanH made mention of my "credentials" so I was offering that the advice I gave comes not just from a point of having been the "other man" and therefore understanding why a married woman would seek association with one; but also from the perspective of a guy who spends a lot of time with women in general.
I know how to fix the guy's problem. Of course, he can't fix his problem the exact same way I would, that's stupid. With so many people weighing in, and now making me the focus of the conversation, I felt the need to more clearly articulate my perspective.
Again... the whole swinger's club thing was just ONE suggestion and apparently almost no one understood that I was not, in any way, advocating swinging. Even though I said as much rather explicitly.
Soft+Gentle got it exactly right. Take the spirit of what I suggested. Reinject EXCITEMENT into the relationship and don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone, and ESPECIALLY hers since she's already shown that she's willing to go to some length to be entertained.

All of my closest friends are women. At this moment, I'm sitting at the kitchen table talking over this thread with 3 women. If I'm not hanging out with girls, I'm hanging out with gay male friends. Typcially. I'm not a normal guy. But I'm good at girls, because I'm with them all the time. That's what I meant about success in associated matters. Women LIKE to be around me. It is from being the only male participant in many many many candid conversations with women that I draw my relationship knowledge. Granted the women I associate with are grown, open-mindend and feel no need for matching bra and panties [that last part is a current conversation point].
I've been to swinger's clubs with my current long term committed lady many many times. She is a very good girl, prudish even, she had ZERO interest in women and ZERO interest in swinging. She STILL HAS ZERO INTEREST IN SWINGING. But from time to time, she thinks it's a lot of fun to go to the club, and afterward we'll have sex 4 or 5 times a day for the next several days. So for me, the proof is in the pudding. Full disclosure, over time she did decide that she had some affection for the fairer sex and we've had a few 3somes.
I've also taken several female friends to swingers clubs with me. They also had no interest in swinging. They also had a great time at the club. I'm sure it's all about who you go with. But I've never had a bad experience and I've never had sex in a swinger's club.
Again... this is ONE of the suggestions I threw out. The only reason we're still talking about it is because those who can't read and want to jump to conclusions interpreted my suggestion as advocating wife-swapping. I did no such thing, I didn't even advocate a 3some as one other poster did.

I also said...
I wasn't suggesting ACTUALLY swinging. But a swinger's club is a very sexually charged environment.
JonathanH said that he was envious that he couldn't have the little fantasy that she had. I think going to a swinger's club [not swinging, not having sexual contact with anyone else] is a way to assuage that emotion. The idea is to recognize that it's natural to be attracted to and be found attractive by the opposite sex. And to figure out how to redirect the feelings of excitement at being found attractive and interesting BACK TO YOUR PARTNER.
Again, we've already established that you've never been to such a club so you have NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. I could make all sorts of assumptions about what goes on in a KH, but if I've never been in one my conclusions would be baseless and meaningless.
My point was, she went to another man's house because she needed some excitement and he has a need to settle his jealousy issues. Properly handled, my suggestions fulfill both.
I have no need of explaining myself on this issue, in particular. I'm offering the experience of a guy who is quite successful in associated matters. Take it, leave it. It's of no consequence to me.
Who goes to a restaurant and doesn't eat? Come on, man... and what did I lie about? I've never lied once on any post on this board.
And thank you, NewChapter, it never occurred to me that someone might take advice that they didn't personally deem valid. Apparently some disagree...
Lifestooshort-- I've always been contrarian. Never much felt the need to strive for popularity.
