your thoughts on the real reasons behind the stigma of beards..........................
I teach high school in an affluent area outside of Los Angeles. For those that know, or care, about such things, are CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) Pass Rate is 99% compared to between 30-40% for the state at large.
In an informal study which I personally conducted at a recent staff meeting of the entire faculty, roughly 40% of our male teachers have a beard or a goatee.
The WTBTS is so out of touch it would be laughable if it weren't so sad.
i just started reading eric hoffer's seminal work, "the true believer: thoughts on the nature of mass movements".
in it he made this very interesting comment: .
"a man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding.
I just started reading Eric Hoffer's seminal work, "The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements". In it he made this very interesting comment:
"A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people's business. This minding of other people's business expresses itself in gossip, snooping and meddling and also in feverish interest in communal ... affairs. In running away from ourselves we either fall on our neighbor's shoulder or fly at his throat." - page 14, Emphasis added.
This struck me as possibly a partial explanation for the GB's intrusive, over-bearing and rule-oriented approach to religion. Obviously, the Promised End has not come. The things that ostensibly should give their lives meaning are empty, meaningless. They are essentially pencil-pushing bureaucrats, so the only way they can find something remotely resembling the meaning they so much desire is to attempt to control every aspect of the lives of those that they are supposed to be caring for lovingly.
As always, your thoughts are welcome and invited!

what reasons was given why jehovah looked down.
too earth and said, these are the people that is doing.
my will, they are unbalance, sorry mean unblemish.. they may not get it right for the first 100yrs, but they.
It's true that JWs don't believe in hellfire, but the WTBTS's "God will destroy the wicked at Armageddon ..." doctrine is really just another variation of the Hellfire teaching.
After all, the whole point is to manipulate and control through fear: Death at Armageddon, Burning Forever in Hell ... just another variation on a theme. Hey, whatever works!!!

He didn't. End of story!
do you feel that something has changed within god's organization?
have you noticed that in the past several years there has been a more authoritarian spirit displayed in the publications and from the platform?
i am in the beginning stages of a fade away and wanted to express my thoughts.
SIAM asked, "Would Jesus have treated sinners the way that we as Witnesses treat sinners?"
Jesus answers, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way; from now on practice sin no more.” - John 8:11
In my experience (25 years as a JW, 20+ of which I was an elder), most JWs start out as sincere Truth-seekers. But everything about the organization--the absurd rules, the hypocrisy, etc.--eventually forces most to become pretenders, pretending to be someone/something they are not.
Some few actually fit in nicely and remain "True Believers". IMO, they are the really scary ones!
Then you either leave, fade, DA yourself, get DF-ed or remain stuck in the movement (no offense to SIAM).
As always, your mileage may vary.

your thoughts on the real reasons behind the stigma of beards..........................
Who knows, it's just so stupid the miniscule things they gotta' control about other people. Even the last WT article on the subject is what, 50-60 years old!
I mean, seriously, how does this stupid rule make sense??? Jews in Bible times weren't even supposed to NOT have a beard. Russell had that God-awful bushy mess of a beard.
Probably Knorr or somebody couldn't grow one, and "Dammit, if'n I can't do it, nobody can!"
i'm usually a cognac drinker.
i love armagnac too.
and i enjoy a martini i invented---mandarin vodka with a slight bit, usually about a capful of chambord served in an ice cold martini glass.. this saturday i'm mixing with my gf's friends and family in conn. with some affluent people and i might want to try something different.
If it's hot, a nice cold beer or maybe a G&T.
Otherwise it depends on what else I'm having:
when i was still serving as an elder in the late summer of 2006 in a congregation of jws in socal we received a letter from the "christian congregation of jehovah's witnesses" (read: the governing body) directing that anyone pursuing a higher education would be disqualified from privileges of service: elder, servant, pioneer, etc.
i remember this quite distinctly because i had just received by ba in education in june a few months before this.
in 2002, i had decided to pursue a degree under the society's then current "it's a personal decision" policy and was quite shocked at their drastic policy change.
Several ex-Elders have commented on the letter I previously mentioned circa Fall 2006. It seems that, while many recall it, we have differing recollections as to what exactly it said regarding Higher Education and Privileges.
As I mentioned, I recall it being fairly straightforward (in typical WT insinuating fashion ... if you can call that straightforward).
Does anybody have a copy of it?
Daniel
