i'm sitting here in awe, just having read that evacuation helicopters are reporting being shot at in louisiana.
shot at.. looters are seeing an opportunity to take goods that will probably be destroyed or paid for by insurance anyway.
it's dirty and nasty and wrong, but i can live with it.
I am just disgusted at what I am seeing and hearing on the news.
Four days after this and these people have no food or water,,,,,,,,,at the Superdome? How can the US not provide at least that?
I am just sick over the ones with guns shooting the choppers trying to get them out? What in the world , why are they shooting the choppers?
I just heard there are dead bodies inside and outside the Superdome. That is horrible. The people were told to go there and they are dying there, or scared to death because of the gangs and criminals. I would get my family and start walking out I guess. I rather die on the way on , on the road than stay there.
So Fema or the Pres. is begging for volunteer firefighters to help out........how many of our troops are there now?

yesterday i quit smoking.
its something i have been thinking of trying for a while, and i finally got round to it.
it was a tough day and a sleepless night, i probably had a couple of hours, and i am under no illusions about today being any easier.
Every smoker I know thinks I am weird because I can quit smoking and not feel withdrawals........I sometimes smoke a cig a day.....sometimes I don't. Sometimes cig smoke makes me ill. If I smoked everyday even, I would make myself quit. I kind of see it as someone who smokes the occasional cigar.....maybe with a drink or something.
But most smokers I know hurt real bad at first , so good luck and you made it this far, if you go back that painful day would be in vain.

from the different houstonians i talk to, many of them are showing some hostility towards the new orleans refugees.
many of my associates say that many businesses are being bought out and being replaced with new orlean ran businesses, and many other people worry about new orlean's crime history and how that would affect houston.
i'm trying to volunteer at the astrodome hopefully (parents are jws so everything volunteering for a group is terrible) but i was just wondering how other people felt about the raised emotions of the refugees from new orleans and how that will affect other people.
I think the Louisianans should be worried about HOUSTON, before they worry about the Louisianans! There is NO hostility in Texas against the Lousianans that Iknow of.
Houston has a very high crime rate as well. My dad moved us out of Houston when I was four because it was getting so bad way back then. I mean for real........the Louisiana uneducated poor trash is gonna dirty up Houston? OKAYYYYY..
I love Texas as I was born right there in Houston,,,,there are many people who live in Houston who are from were born in little towns in Louisiana, I have many relatives who are there now.
Texas is our sister state and CG is right there is no hostility that I have ever heard of.......unless you like the Saints or the Cowboys!! Now there is the hostility. BTW...........I like the Cowboys!
i mean...it doesn't matter what the potential disaster is...there is always a group of morons that think they are invincible and can weather anything mother nature can throw at them.... is this evolutions way of strengthening the strain?
or is it weeding out the stupid weak?.

I dont feel that way about reporters at all. I think they are doing their job, they are bringing the truth to us with visuals our own eyes can see.
I think that when people see those folks waving white flags stranded on the roof tops.........it makes it really real to them.
To me it makes a big difference when I see what is going on , instead of just hearing it or reading it.
Now if they were filming dead bodies or really exploting people I would agree. So far I havent seen anything too graphic IMO.
I don't take it as entertainment either, I don't enjoy the scenes I see. I cry. But it moves me to do something about it, I can't get the pictures of the devastation and plight of those people out of my head now.
Does anyone here like Anderson Cooper, the News reporter. They are not being sick covering this news , IMO, because you can tell they are distraught over it. There are many newscasters down there who are from AL, MS and LA, and they too have missing families. It has to be painful to see their childhood towns gone and their people in such shape.

I can only assume that they didnt want to leave everything they worked for, probably less than middle class folks , not exactly poverty level but close I would think. I am sure they were afraid of looters as it turned out to be horribly true. But what a price to pay, staying behind to protect their belongings. Even with that,,,,,I still feel sorry for them. I have to wonder if they just felt they had no place to go. Everyone reacts to these thing differently I guess. I would have left and left what I had behind.
me and the kids went to rent movies and noticed that there were long lines of people waiting for gas.
we live in shreveport/bossier louisiana about five hours north of new orleans.
we do have tons of evacuees here and so i understand it is going to be busier here than usual.. people were breaking lines to get gas tonite, and you could feel the tension in the air.

I was not affected by the storm but we have tons of evacuess here,,,,,,,crying ,,because they are running out of money for rooms and food. They are in hotels and are scared to death. They have no homes to go too, and New Orleans might have water for 6 months. What will they do?
They are the lucky ones thou, at least they had a ride out , money to last a few days, or relatives. Some did not have any of those things.

You have to know the NewOrleans area,,,,,very, very poor people.
To evacuate, you need a ride out,,,,,,,,did they have a car? Did they have someone that would take them out? Did they have any money, for a motel room? Did they have relatives to take them in? Most of them the answer was NO!
I have been watching the news and the truth of it is that so many of these people couldnt get out as easy as you think. Not many people can pay 75 to 100 bucks and more a nite for a room, plus food .
I feel great compassion for people like this.
The ones who could have left , but only stayed to save their possessions I feel sorry for too,,,,,,,because they too are dead.
