I saw a news item on Yahoo that said that 20 (out of about 550) of the oil drilling platforms in the Gulf are missing...status unknown.
Wow, that is scarey.
me and the kids went to rent movies and noticed that there were long lines of people waiting for gas.
we live in shreveport/bossier louisiana about five hours north of new orleans.
we do have tons of evacuees here and so i understand it is going to be busier here than usual.. people were breaking lines to get gas tonite, and you could feel the tension in the air.

I didn't know the President finally spoke to the nation tonite, that makes sense now. I am trying to see if I can find his speech on CNN.
This gas price is going to affect everything. Who is going to get in the car to get some .99cent cheeseburgers when it cost $5 to get there?
I will be only going up the road for necessary things that is for sure.

They are selling out of gas here on many of the pumps and that is scarey.
Is the price going to jump dramatically tomorrow or something? Anyone heard anything?
okay, let's say you find yourself in the big easy.
no lights, no phone, no motorcar, not a single luxury.. you have kids, you have yourself.
everyone is hungry, and thirsty, and drinking the water will kill you (even walking around in it isn't real safe.).
There is a difference between the looters stealing for food, water, medical supplies etc. and those stealing TV's VCR's etc.
I was watching Nancy Grace tonite and a National Guard or Army official said they know the difference between the two kinds of looters, I sure hope so.
They should encourage as many folks to go into that big Winn Dixie, Piggly Wiggly and take the food, the water, the diapers because it will be a waste if they don't.
Yes,,,,, I would steal to feed my family I believe. We can say all day we might not........but think about those people on the airplane that went down........they ate the flesh of their friends to survive. You just don't know how you will react to literally survive. It is scarey.
Watching the news and seeing the frantic , desperate people, so afraid is so sad. I can't imagine being down there in that trying to get out with my kids.
i am so shocked by the devastation in the south from katrina.
watch the news channel for a few minutes and you can imagine the grief, heartbrake and misery that thousands of people are experiencing as we read this board.
please, if you have any money at all to donate, do it now while it is fresh in your mind.
Here are somethings that are going on in our town filled with evacuees:
Just about all the stores are taking donations, there are people from the RedCross, to the local radios there to collect anything they can.
So far one of the local radio stations have collected just today three uhaul size trucks of donations to head down to Slidell, Louisiana to help support the firefighter who are in search and rescue.
They are mainly asking for bottled water, gatoraid, non parishable foods because they are so tired, not stopping looking for people . The firefighters have to eat on the run.
My city of Shreveport/Bossier sent 55 firefighters down to Slidell for search and resue. I am sure there are many more volunteers heading that way, I have heard of EMT, Paramedics etc who are signing up.
I heard on the local news that area business are really helping out. Midas is giving 20% off for evacuees. Pat Goins beauty school is giving free haircuts to evacuees. And every sign at gas stations , stores, restaurants have on them........"Our Hearts are with you Evacuees.. Welcome".
It is all the talk you hear in town at the stores........the firefighters going out not sleeping looking for folks , etc. etc. reminds me of 9/11.
just a question to put out there but, are there any countries in world who have pledged to help the us durring this time of crisis?.
or is it going to be, the us is rich enough they can take care of themselves!.
just would like to know.. ta (of the can i get a hand china, russia, france (yeah right)...class)
The last two days I have been dealing with my son who had dental surgery and trying to watch the news to keep up on this hurricane tragedy.
But answer me this.........Has the President made a national address on this hurricane? I have no clue on what he has said so far and want to catch up. I hear he is flying over New Orleans on Friday.........well he can just turn on CNN and see the damage and at least make a statement........I may be speaking out of ignorance because I admit I havent been able to watch the News as much as possible .
If he would just get there, as close as possible , or send someone who can reassure the people who lost everything, that help , serious help with funds will be available to them, it would help ease their pain.
I can not imagine , what the ones who lost everything, have no money in the bank, no family to help them must be going thru. Especially the families with children to feed . What a crisis.

I just had to share this.......here in NW Louisiana life is not at all the norm. Someone asked about the school situation for the kids who left New Orleans. The school kids here have all day long,,,,,,,,,talked about what they can do to help locally. The need here locally is tremendous,,,,,,,,there are so many children in hotels right down the street who only have the clothes on their backs.
A sweet young boy came to my door asking me to donate coloring books, paper, crayons, anything to keep kids occupied while in shelters or hotels. I told him that yeah I was going to Walmart anyway today to get things for evacuees and that I would buy some coloring books and supplies for the kids. My youngest son and this boy are going door to door asking for donations of coloring books.
Now that is a door to door work I am damn proud of .
This boy JT who is with my son is 13 and he is donating his beloved Game Cube to the kids at a shelter. His game cube, is worth $200.00 and he loves playing it. But,,,he is sacrificing it because he cares , good kids I tell ya , they make me so proud.
Every little thing someone can do, your time , money (even a few dollars out of your own pocket,) and even if you can just listen, give a hug to some of the evacues if you are in MS, Tex, Louisiana help so much.

((((((((((Randy))))))))) I am in Shreveport/Bossier Louisiana area, 5 hours north of New Orleans. Our motels are jammed full. Traffic is crazy around here, stores are flooded. The personal stories I have heard already are heartbreaking. I have cried so much today.......people are on the local news, just begging for help. I havent seen anything like this , this up close , in my life. It is so scarey, people are literally fighting to survive, looking for help for the bacis needs, food , clothing, a place to lay their heads.
Even in towns an hour north of me, my old hometown of Springhill has opened the Civic Center as a shelter. My friend who lives there was so torn up , crying at the people she met there.....such sad stories. People don't even know where their missing family members can be. They are depending on the good hearts of people who are willing to give something to help them. My friend and her Mom, took four little kids , the evacuees at the shelter to Walmart and bought them new clothes and a toy. Every little bit helps. I am going to drive up there to help this weekend, as I still feel something special with that little town and the people there.
I don't have a whole lot to give money wise, as I am taking care of relatives who are down on their luck already before this storm. But , I think we can all do something. I am going to Walmart this evening to buy some food, cokes, etc. and I am taking it to the Super 8 hotel , as I heard the Motels around here are taking personal donations to distribute.
The Salvation Army, Red Cross are truly the organization that show the most Christain love IMO.
This is a horrible tragedy, and it gets worse with the news coverage of how bad things are,,,,,,,just the beginning of seeing the destruction.
People are begging for help.........begging.
i've never been there myself, but every single person being shown on the news is black.
wading through the streets, stranded on rooftops, etc.
i'm not sure if the media is just focusing on certain areas of new orleans or if it's a predominantly african american city.. the only footage i've seen other than this has been mardi gras and that consists mostly of tourists.
I was watching the news, and one of the police chiefs or someone in charge was telling his men........" don't worry about the dead bodies, right now,,,,,,,get the live ones". How horrible , how sad, there must be many dead bodies for them to say that........right now they are still resucing so many.
missing n.c. girl found safe in iowa .
associated press
rocky mount, n.c. - a rocky mount girl reported missing since last week was found tuesday in iowa, authorities said.. des moines police found jodie collie, 12, at the city's bus station shortly after 9 p.m. edt.
Collie and Denkler apparently had talked on the telephone for months. The girl's mother, Kim Baker, said she knew of Denkler, but no one in the family was aware of his criminal record or that he had been in touch with her daughter.
That is crazy,,,,,,,,the mother knew they were talking on the phone?? My daughter is 12 and no boys call her yet.....and if a male voice is on that voice it better be going thru puberty and cracking up . I think I would know if my daughter was talking to a full grown man or a kid for god's sake.
My daughter has just started chatting on a yahoo teen site and I have my computer in the L/R so no one can talk private really. If she ever gave our number to anyone online , her ass would be grass.
As parents we have to monitor our kids so carefully. Still anything can happen.........it does all the time, but we can stop things like this from happening by telling our kids of the real life dangers and stories . And we have to stay on top of it , reminding them all the time .
But........I am sooooo glad this girl got home, I just blame the mother , because it sounds like she DID know enough .
