Gems from the August 15, 2011 WT
by Ultimate Reality inpdfs can be obtained at jw.org.... spiritual gem #1. perhaps witnesses should apply the standard the wt recommends for gathering information on the internet to wt publications; from page 4:.

Where did the author get the information? Does he
supply sources that can be checked?
That's the beauty of Wikipedia articles on Jehovah's Witnesses, the faithful slave, the Governing Body, the failed predictions and criticism of the religion in general: a verifiable source for every statement is provided.

Circuit Overseer talking Ray Franz in talk this morning (Phone number included)
by LightsOut ini'm still a semi member of the kh but not at all active and have major doubts when i started reading all kinds of opposing literature.
talked to elders about this and also my father but my father but he still believes it's the "truth".
anyways jist of this story is i gave my father a copy of "crisis of conscience".

My God, "Some think that 3-4 hours a month will save them".
Just where in the Bible do these people find the notion that a person has to fill a monthly quota to be "saved"?
Odd that Ray Franz wasn't "prepared to wait". Wait on who or what? Without GB members actually raising doctrinal issues, and talking them out with friends, how would doctrinal changes ever take place? His CoC book gives numerous examples of GB members bringing to the table discussion points, from which doctrinal changes were made. How is that his proposals marked him as an apostate?
There's no logic in this at all. It's cultic thinking pure and simple. It would be the height of fantasy to think that any member of the organisation could stand up at a KH and give a reasoned, dispassionate opinion on the developments surrounding Franz's expulsion. The company line is that he was proud, lacking in humility, trying to draw away followers and critical. Expressing any sympathy for him or his ideas would be suicide for any elder or CO.

Is there a reliable list of average publisher stats year by year?
by MrMonroe indoes anyone have a link to stats drawn from wt publications on average publishers year by year since about 1945?
i have figures 1989 to 2010, but there are gaps for many years in between because of the inconsistent policy of full disclosure in the yearbooks.. thanks..
-
MrMonroe
Thanks, figures were located and have now been added to a chart on the Wikipedia page for the JW article. Paul's figures at JWFacts were good, but he had already used them in a chart and I needed the raw figures.

Correct. For some years the yearbook on the cdrom contains a short summary, other years there's none. That means I go looking for a mention of the figure in the general comments in the YB or that year's Jan 1 WT, but it's very hit and miss. I'm relying on someone who may have collated them from the hard copies.

New Light @ The 2011 District Convention
by dontplaceliterature in" at the bottom of the image on the back of the invitation raises some eyebrows, but last night in the routine district convention article during the service meeting, i caught that one of the paragraphs mentioned that we would be encouraged to keep a copy of the tract in hand for a discussion during sunday's last talk.
my guess is, there is going to be some new revelation about what the "?
" represents, or some other fangled idea.
-
MrMonroe
The 1978 WT dismissing the prophetic significance of the 10 toes is dangerously logical and commonsense. It adds no mystery, raises no questions whose answers will "soon be revealed" and is not explained with any far-fetched, fear-mongering suggestion that includes the use of the word "evidently". I'll take a stab and suggest that answer was provided by Ray Franz.

Funniest JW memory?

Witnessing with a fat sister who offered the "Watchtower and Awake."
Householder: "No thanks, I don't need to watch my weight."
Working with an elderly sister who, sensing the rather butch female householder was from up Moscow way, asked her, "Are you Russian?
Householder: "Yes, I'm just on my way out."
Witness: "Well I'll leave you this then. You might find it easier to read." (Hands her a booklet in Russian).
Householder, eyeing it rather dubiously because she obviously doesn't know a word of Russian: "Ah, thanks ..... "

Pangs of Conscience - June 2011 KM
by dozy inthere is an article in the latest kingdom ministry about counting time spent in the ministry.
one comment surprised me - it says that counting time wrongly can lead to "pangs of conscience".
a bit of an ott expression , i can't help thinking.. the only pangs the local pioneers are concerned about here are hunger pangs as they head to dunkin donuts for a 40 minute "break".

Very rarely is anything new written in their literature. And so it is with this. See OKM 10/74,
"When some question arises, ask yourself: Has this time been spent in the preaching activity? Or has it been spent doing something else that is not actually part of that work? Report all the time you conscientiously feel was used in the preaching work. The amount you report in comparison with others is not important. (Gal. 6:4) The important thing is that the love in your heart has moved you to share your faith with others. (Luke 6:45) What we report should give us joy and not pangs of conscience."

my name is dan edmund, and am a fellow witness from australia.

I don't mind Dan being here. I, too, am now having a lot of single Filipino girls smiling at me on this page. (If someone cares to start a thread about breast enlargement that may not be a bad thing ...)
It's good to see this guy's response. He didn't run away in fear, he seemed to treat us with respect. Dan, it would be good to scan some of the threads in this forum. Your frank comments would probably be appreciated.
