Teejay, that statement was what stuck out the most to me, too.
I was livid when I heard Connie read that.
I can see how the average JW could interpret a general disfellowshipping policy as a 'very strong policy' against molestation, ignoring all the built-in loopholes. But how can one single dub read that sentence and not have alarms go off in their head?
"Special care" is taken? As in going above and beyond normal care? Do they arrange for the victim to see a professional counselor? Do they encourage the victim to go to authorities to seek justice and help protect other potential victims? It seems to me that these are the absolute minimum a supposedly loving, Christian organization would do for victims. What in the hell is the society doing that would be special by any other organization's standards?
Let's give the society the benefit of the doubt and assume they don't threaten victims with disfellowshipping for exposing their abusers. Let's give them a HUGE break and assume they don't discourage them from going to the authorities (even the society doesnt have the temerity--yet--to actually claim that they actively encourage victims to go to police). This still puts them at the bare minimum of care for the victims, the bottom rung of human decency. Where is the "ongoing assistance and counsel"? (Note: Not counseling, but counsel.) Can any honest Witness claim that victims are given ongoing assistance beyond a one-time "study, pray, and preach more, and by the way dont tell anyone" damage control pep talk?
JWs parrot this crap without even thinking about it. Ask them to give an example of special ongoing care and they're completely lost, because Mother hasn't deigned to provide any examples for them to regurgitate.
Hmmm
