Dealing with reality after leaving the witnesses
by lancelink inthis afternoon i was reading newsweek, and smithsonian magazine online, and there were two video's on the sites that really caused a massive conflict in me.. one video was about the 3rd and 4th generations of children living in viet nam who had grandparents, and great-grandparents who had to deal with agent orange back in the 1960's.
sorry i can't find the video now.
then i was reading the smithsonian magazine and there was a vidoe about illegal wildlife trade in the world:.

bullfighting
by lancelink ina friend of mine recently returned home from a trip to spain.. one day he went to a resturaunt down the street from an arena where they have bullfights, the "plaza de toros".. in the menu were bull testicles, so feeling somewhat adventurous he tried them, thought they were a little tough and had little flavor, and another.
thing, they were big, almost the size of a pear each !.
he ate two and left.. .

Missing a big part of life
by lancelink ini celebrated christmas for 17 years before my parents became jw's.. when we became witnesses my dad got rid of decades worth of christmas decorations.. my grandparents came over from austria during ww 2 and ornaments from their parents were hung on our tree.. the tradition went on up to the mid 70's,, we had many old ornaments that were just thrown out when the wt society thinking.
took over.. now that i am in my late 40's and have gone full circle, we will be celebrating the ho;lidays this year.. .
shopping at target last night i fully realized what my family has lost.

One year and counting
by lancelink inif you look at the previous post, i wrote down what the final nail in my jw carreer was.. and i'll tell you right now, i have absolutly no intention of returning to this religion,,,, but several things have happened and i would appreciate your personal thoughts on the matter.. when my mom died, about the same time my wife became baptized as a mormon, she was a witness for 20 years before.. she was satisfied spiritually so i left her to her own beliefs.
besides i was in no mental position to continually argue about it.
she developed lots of new friends, and i focused on myself, dealing with the death of a parent was alot hard than i thought it would be.

If you have left, how would you treat witnesss you run into ?
by lancelink ini da'ed myself back in october 2008.. i also work at a local community college, where the witnesses have a booth set up during the winter months and usually there are 3 -4 people.
just sitting there counting their time.. they are located in a student lounge area where i need to cross several times a day.. my question is this: would you just ignore them totally,.
would you approach them if they made eye contact, or would you just approach them whenever and say hello ?

where do you draw the line ?
by lancelink inlast night i was talking to my son (24 years old) and he was telling me about his life growing up as a jw, .
very frustrating for him, he couldn't have friends from school over, no joining clubs, sports, etc - etc.. but a very interesting point was made, and i never thought about it and it has been rolling around all day.
as morphius said.

Tedd kennedy statement
by lancelink ini was three years old when jfk was shot.. hardly remember bobby dying.. yet with all the tedd kennedy stuff on the news this week, i was just thinking about how this family has affected so many people over the years.. and still while reading about ted's life, his problems / triumphs / sorrows and joys, a little comment was printed that really grabbed my attention.. the kennedy's were all catholic, and it seems that ted had a really powerful opinion about religion:.
" i am an american and catholic, i love my country and treasure my faith, but i do not assume that my conception of patriotism or policy is unvariably correct.
or that my convictions about religion should command any greater respect than any other faith in this pluralistic society.. i believe that there surely is such a thing as truth, but who among us can claim a monopoly on it ?

encouraging JW "nighmare" stories
by lancelink inrecently i was thinking back over the years, and thought about the horrible stories the watchtower published hoping that.
the rank and file would be encouraged, or think of ways to improve their own life.. instead of a heartwarming, or upbuilding story, it was something found in the ultimate gloom story.. the worst i can remember was back in the early 1980's, my oldest son was just born, and in some magazine / book there was a story about a. sister who was being persecuted.. she also had just given birth, and the persons who were doing the persecuting had the mother locked, or tied up and had the baby lay right outside of her reach.. all she had to do was renounce her faith, and the baby would be returned to her.. i don't remember how the story ended, but that just scared the s**t out of my wife and i. no way could i put a religion above the life of my child in that situation.. but i do remember the moral of the story was for us to "build up our spirituality" because things like this will happen soon.. good grief, this was 25 years ago, and it really made a mark on me for years.
yet i always knew that religion would be #2 in a situation like that.. and for years i felt unworthy because i did not have the correct mindset crafted by the wt society regarding this type of situation.. anyone else have a personal experience like this ?
