We are trapped in our own texts ... but when we read the words one by one we can try to "understand" what the novel is about and, above all, why .

We are fiction(s).
by Narkissos inthis is the truth.
hidden in plain sight.. know thyself.. we were made in the image of god after all.. not only fiction, but also fiction.
biology and fiction.. not basically a "bad" thing to repent from.

Understanding.
by Narkissos ini was thinking that understanding -- in the sense of self-, community- or world-understanding -- might be the main stuff people are looking for, and willing to buy, in religion and philosophy.
even before hope, comfort, practical help or the sense of belonging.
a "vision" (in greek theoria) that "makes sense" of "reality" as it is perceived and construed.. it seems to me that such understanding (or intelligibility) has little to do with "truth".

Perfect understanding will sometimes almost extinguish pleasure (Housman on poetry)
Our western culture is strongly influenced by platonic understanding, i.e. the quest for extra-empirical concepts like ousia, archè, telos, God and Man. This implies a static world image.
Poststructuralist thinking is more fragmented, dynamic and less truth-seeking. Panta rhei.

A STUNNINGLY simple question about JOHN 3:16 "For God so Loved the world."
by Terry inon what basis did god so love the world?.
the world of mankind had been condemned to death by god's curse in eden!.
god viewed mankind as "dust on the scales".

"Why would a merciful judge be merciful". The more astute among you will note the similarity in sentence structure to the apparently unanswerable quandry, "Why does a man who loves fishing, go fishing?
Fishing isn't a quality. Syntactical similarity, maybe, semantic similarity, certainly not.

Why does a man who loves fishing, go fishing?---I really want to understand this!
You presuppose that a man who loves fishing, goes fishing? Wrong hypothesis, it depends on a lot of interactive variables. Hence, I can't answer your question.

Sirona's God and the Perspectivist Approach
by hamilcarr inour culturally biassed and contextual image of god is that of a male being, omnipotent, eternal, and existing outside the created world.
sirona introduced me to a new type of god (maybe one without caps, i'm not sure): a divinity who is human-like, framed within the human perspective, subject to suffering, growing and dying, like anything else in the visible universe.. isn't it time to face the fact that our western image of god is nothing more than our perspective on god with all its negative and positive aspects included?
why do we need to prove the existence of our god if it's only the perspective we feel comfortable with?

They are questions which have their common source in the quest for meaning which has always compelled the human heart. In fact, the answer given to these questions decides the direction which people seek to give to their lives.
Science is one of the perspectives attempting to tackle these vital questions. The recent history of the RC church attests to the close link between science and religion --- even as far as meaning is considered. I think self-consciousness or a reflexive attitude is one of the advantages of the scientific perspective. The promise of full knowledge has constantly been deferred.

So you don't claim your perspective is based on reason?

Was Jesus really without sin?
by Terry inhe violated the sabbath law and he saved a condemned woman from being stoned in compliance with the law.. does it matter he had scruples and self-justifying theological arguments?.
would those arguments have saved anybody else from being put to death?.
technically speaking (the letter of the law) could we truly speak of jesus as really without sin?.

A really subtle troll makes some people lose their minds.
Was Jesus really without sin?
It's all about perspectives.

Athiests please answer these questions
by Mrs Smith ini'm not trying to pick a fight i was just sitting at my desk pondering on some threads on jwd and i would very much like this question answered.. why is it that athiest often (not always) direct their argument for athiesism towards christians?
why not direct your argument towards buddists or muslims or even new-agers?
i mean they also believe in a higher power so why is it that only christains seem to get knocked?

Why would you believe in Allah once you have rejected the Christian God? One answer could be that you have become a monotheist. Most JWD discussions, however, don't deal with the Trinity problem but the notion of God in general.

?Human ego = Religion?
by R.Crusoe indoes the need/insecurity for many people to have a partner devote to them alone cause them to want a religious type?.
is lifelong love 'holy' or does it simply feel so good that humans are selfish enough to create rules to enforce it as holy because they insist on having it - or are unable to cope with rejection or feeling worthless and replaced by another?.
do we each so hate being betrayed that we feel just in punishing ones who aren't?

It makes a pretense of cold logic. It makes a pretense at shedding light.
Religion doesn't?
The entire human history is a quest for light ...
Dixitque Deus : Fiat lux. Et facta est lux – Genesis 1:3.
Scientia vincere tenebras – Universitas Bruxellensis
Mehr Licht – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord. – Evening Prayer
Soweit wir zu erkennen vermögen, ist es der einzige Sinn der menschlichen Existenz, ein Licht anzuzünden in der Finsternis des bloßen Seins. – Carl Gustav Jung
