Looking back, I would have to say that philosophy was a teach 'how to think' class. I never appreciated it when I was taking the class, but now looking back, I can see how much it really has impacted my life positively. I think it is a great class overall.

What is your experience with a Philosophy class?
by Blueblades instudents wandering into a philosophy class are usually hoping to gain some perspectives on, say, the meaning of it all, but then some rumpled guy in mismatched tweeds ambles up to the podium and starts lecturing on the meaning of "meaning.".
first things first, he says.
before we answer any questions, big or small, we need to understand what the question itself signifies.

Tough Questions for Jehovah's Witness...
by Tuesday inhey folks!
wondering if everyone here is willing to weigh in on a thought i had.
so i've been on youtube alot lately and came across this profile:.

I've always felt the same way...
- Since 99.99% of people reject the 'good news', aren't all preachers condemning virtually all people they preach to death? They're not giving a lifesaving message, they're killing everyone.
- Is it fair that they get death for a typically poor 10-second presentation of a WT magazine, not even the bible?
- Did the people even know what they said no to? -

What Was The Silliest "Offense" That You Were Counseled For?
by minimus inwhen i was a teenager, i was told by an elder that because i smiled a lot and was known for my good sense of humor, that i should come across as "more serious".
so before i was appointed a ms, while in my late teens, i transformed myself into a much more "serious" brother.. were you ever told that you needed to work on something that you knew was stoopid?.

Saying the word "jeez"... because it's based on the word Jesus.

Most LUDICROUS thing you've ever heard at the KINGDOM HALL
by berylblue ini certainly have heard a lot of idiotic stuff during my tenure as a witness - but this one is priceless:.
a neophyte was complaining about the heat, humidity, physical effort, etc., involved in attending the district convention at veteran's stadium in philadelphia - and she was right.
it was miserable.

To me the worst was an elder's wife told me "everything you hear on stage comes directly from Jehovah".
Even back then I thought that type of blind faith was dangerous. -

one aspect of mind control is thought control by using "loaded language"
by megaflower inwe all know the wts has its own set of words and expressions that make them unique and sets them a part from other organizations.
lets see how many we can come up with.
i'll start.

When a JW, what did you think about human fossils of 1.2 million years
by LouBelle inwhen i was in and documentaries came on the telly about human fossils being found dated 800 000 years old or 1.2 million years old i would always say - they surely must have the dating process wrong (hello - i'm not expert) or would try find a loop whole to make sure that the belief of mans' 6/7000 year existance.. i also used to reason that they were probably a species of apes or forgeries - anything to make myself believe we as jws' were right - i did this without even "thinking" really - like breathing.. i even studied science & biology at school and would also have to come up with ""excuses"" for this or that.
ag what did we know we were only kids, but when you become an adult and have adult reasoning faculties one can't ignore the facts.. so what did you create as a safe bubble when things like this came up?.

To me this was part of the Doublethink. I used to think it made sense that man has been around a long time, AND it made sense that man's been around a lot shorter than that, and we just don't really know. I just believed both a little and it was just another issue of doublethink that was piling on...

slower to chase down those that disagree?
by IMustBreakAway inperhaps this is a local phenomenon.
but it seems the elders are slower to chase down those that disagree, or have faded in the past few years.
i have heard (and seen) in the past where someone even remotely outspoken about disagreeing with the watchtower or some such would get the fury of divine retribution brought down upon them in an instant.

End of December we had a shepherding call at my house, and I laid out a few concerns. I tried to be very tactful, and said "How can I trust the Society when they change all the time?". I specifically mentioned a few changed doctrines including 1975, blood, and organ transplants. I made it pretty obvious I got my ideas from apostate sites, although I was driven there by many doubts I got at the meetings.
Their response was that -I- should do the research, as to why we need an Organization. That's it! I also have not gone in service since then, and rarely go to meetings. My wife has even told many people explicitly that I don't want to go to any more meetings. Still they haven't bothered me since, and I hope they keep it that way.
I told them I do not discuss my doubts with others, so maybe all that they are about is I'm not spreading my ideas. -

New " Witness Only " Watchtower - Even More Controlling - Check this Out
by flipper init had been 5 years or more since i even read a watchtower article after exiting the witness cult in late 2003. but i was curious to see if the new " witness only " watchtowers were more controlling than i remember them being 5 years ago.
and it certainly opened my eyes to the extreme control.
when you have been away from it - you can really see the difference !

I still feel that the more controlling they try to be, the more people they will squeeze out. The more they talk about apostates and things against the Society, I think at some point people will wonder what they are hiding.
This will especially be true for those (like myself last year) who have some doubts (and many do) and will start thinking on their own.
Problem is, many will just follow it, and stay in just for family and friends. -

Cognac - achieving a middle ground is SO important, since leaving the faith can break up marriages. I was at a point in January where I was all but convinced that it was over, but fortunately things turned around.
