Science is like the WTBTS...(always coming out with New Light)
by journey-on inscience has tried over the centuries to explain human existence, cosmology, and the nature of life.. at any given time in history, any number of theories have been postulated and the masses accepted them.
as fact because some great scientist came up with it and was able to baffle us/them with mathematical.
equations to "prove" it so.

Why is it we can accept New Light as an excuse when it comes to science, but cannot accept it when it comes to matters of theology?
I think I may have to get back to this after some more thought, but initially, one 'short' answer I think would be that there is no way science could know all there is to know about the universe all in one go, and no one is saying that is the case. So the nature of science is that we observe facts about nature, and do our best at forming hypothesis which then may turn into tested theories for how those facts work (like gravity). Theories are seldom tossed out wholesale (ever?), but if new knowledge is found that either contradicts a theory or is not explained by the theory, adjustments must be made. Science works "from the bottom up".
Theology on the other hand rests on the belief in a Supreme Maker who has revealed the secrets of life etc. to mankind. As such, theology should have "all the answers", or at least correct answers every time, at least if this deity exists and does reveal things through revelation. Theology should work "from the Top down". 'New light' in theology cannot be tested for veracity (except for religious history, where new archaeological findings for instance may support a better understanding of events, but since we're talking about 'new light' here, I'm thinking more of "spiritual truths"), because it only rests on a new idea with no outside source of veracity, based on the same religious texts that have been used all along.

Worship Jesus?
by pixel in"now, at christ's coming to reign as king in jehovah's capital organization zion, to bring in a righteous new world, jehovah makes him infinitely higher than the godly angels or messengers and accordingly commands them to worship him.
since jehovah god now reigns as king by means of his capital organization zion, then whosoever would worship him must also worship and bow down to jehovah's chief one in that capital organization, namely, christ jesus, his co-regent on the throne of the theocracy.

Have You Ever Heard of an Atheist Being Visited by a Demon?
by hamilcarr in........ because i haven't.

I actually have experienced a 'poltergeist' once. That was when I was just a kid, and therefore long before I became an atheist, but the experience was real either way. The problem is that since then, I've come up with a perfectly reasonable explanation for how it may have happened. I believed it was a 'demon' (ghost) back then because in addition to the experience itself (and my JW belief system at the time), I then was told that this had happened in that house before, and then a story of some fortune teller 'witch' who had once lived there...
Not sure what to make of it, since I can't go back to verify if there is a totally reasonable explanation (test my 'hypothesis') or not.
Have never encountered anything like it ever since, though. Ironically, that incident kept me a believer for some time longer than I'd been if I hadn't experienced it, 'cause I figured "Well - I had that experience, so at least there's something there".
To the extent I believe some of these kinds of stories are real (sounds and visions of 'spirits'), I'm thinking more along the lines of some 'temporal shift' occurring in certain spots; some anomaly in space-time (although highly unlikely), or some echo from another dimension. Not other living beings from another dimension, but a 'feedback loop' from things that have happened in this dimension, "bouncing off" another dimension back into this one perhaps, and 'replayed', like a 'metaphysical tape recorder'. Or perhaps more likely, some areas may have some kind of energy (could be as simple as electromagnetism and/or infra-sound) that triggers various regions of our brain (some experiments seem to suggest this as a possibility at least). Or of course, when it happens to one individual, can be some mental problem or imbalance of some sort.
But there are probably hundreds of different causes behind all the experiences people say they've had, everything from mere coincidences to something not so easily explained.
As for the kind of 'demons' I was taught about as a JW, they have silenced completely since I left the beliefs behind. I used to pride myself in being able to 'sense' demonic activity (like when hearing a certain type of rock music for instance...) and would of course be scared half to death by 'demonic' movies. But nowadays it's completely silent. There's no one hiding behind the shower curtain either (which is a shame, come to think of it ).

The guiding star over Jesus was controlled by Satan?
by sacolton inwell, that's what my elder told me.
he said that satan was directing the magi to find jesus so they might.
report back to herod who wanted jesus killed.

To fulfill God’s will for him on earth, Jesus had to grow up and become a perfect, full-grown man. Satan, however, tried to kill Jesus before that could happen. The attempts to kill Jesus when he was a child and the ways Jehovah protected him make an exciting story. Would you like to hear it?
Apparently, after this initial (lame) attempt at killing Jesus as a child, Satan just gave up. At any rate, if Satan did try to kill Jesus again in the following twenty-something years, those attempts were even lamer, and so didn't "make for exciting enough stories" to be written down...

Hmm... Why didn't Satan just whisper the exact location into Herod's ear in a dream or something instead? Seems more effective. But who am I to come up with better ideas.

What is Heaven?
by Robert7 inbased on my research the last few months, i think i realize what heaven is.
this is not a new concept, and i'm sure many have come to this conclusion... .
thousands of years ago, the belief was an 'earth-centric' universe.

Come to think of it, heaven (as a metaphysical place where God resides) if it exists will be an unexpected bonus.
On the other hand, Hell (as a metaphysical place with eternal torture) if it exists will be a bonus too. After all, if I go to this 'Hell' I'll still be alive, for all eternity to boot. I'm sure that after a couple of billion years I'll have gotten used to the pain and won't even notice when they gough my eyes out for the trillionth time. I wonder if the punishment can be said to fit my 'crime'?
(since there are so many posters here now that are unable to discern humor and takes everything literally and are offended at the drop of a hat: This post was slightly tongue-in-cheek, but with an edge. Thank you.)

To be a little serious and non-aggressive here, it should be said that many of us here have had that feeling, real one. The feeling of knowing God and His plans for us and our future etc. and really believing in Him, and at one point even felt a need to preach this to others. It's not totally new to us.
-But since Jesus apparently is so easily found ("read the NT and whoop, there He is"), every one here as an individual can choose to do that if they want. But preaching on this forum (telling people what they need to do) won't go over well. Wrong crowd for that. Once bitten, twice shy. Plus many here need more confirmation that a book is divinely inspired than the book itself and those using it proclaiming it to be so. Fulfilled prophecy is probably your best bet to turn some heads here, but don't expect to be able to prove the Bible with the Bible.

- I think you simply misunderstood what LouBelle meant.
She was saying that Jehovah's Witnesses believe Jehovah created Jesus first, and that Jesus then continued creating the rest. And so on. And so she asks; what does Jehovah do in all this, since Jesus seems to be doing all the work? The question is obviously for those who believe in it; she's not saying she believes it.
But I have no idea what your position is, because you haven't bothered to explain your point.

The Bible isn't all bullshit, of course. And that's not what they're saying either, I don't think. Some of it is history, some of it is poetry and great stories, some of it has values worth keeping. Some of it though, is the "opposite" of all those things; some events can't be confirmed outside of the Bible, some of it is not that well written (because it's been put together from various sources), and some of the 'values' aren't worth keeping.
