They mean exactly what they stated in the text. In one of the convention talks several years ago and in an assembly talk a few years back it was mentioned that reading, writing and basic arithmetic was all that was needed. Higher education is bad unless you get it on your dime and then take your degree to Bethel or write checks to them...then it's God's will.

Today's text 22 April 2011 Stay thick!!
by punkofnice ini saw todays text(tm) and it was obvious bait and switch!.
it was banging on about listening to the holy spirit (a good thing if you believe in it), and then they used these sickifying words:.
''we do not need extensive formal education in order to comprehend deep spiritual truths that have been published.''.

Preaching in vain.
by LouBelle inon my way to work (my temp job) i drove past my witness uncle.
there he was on the street preaching to a man.
i knew that stance so well, publication in hand, leaning in towards to hopefully interested person and telling your story.

LouBelle, I had a similar experience. Saw a couple of female JWs in the mall witnessing to someone sitting in one of the waiting/rest areas and felt a little ill at the sight of it.
The skirt, the shoes, the purses especially selected to hold the literature without creasing it, their posture....just everything about it made me want to shake them both and scream "WAKE UP"...but each will awaken in their own time.
What a waste...

Hope you feel lighter after sharing. It amazes me that more people that participate in some form of extended service don't see through the smoke almost immediately.

WTBTS do no wrong in the eyes of believers?
by Momma-Tossed-Me inthe wtbts has enjoyed a well insulated capsule of people for a long time.
the amount of adherents that left was minimal because of the thick wall of fear.
they are riding on a sharp edge that with one great movement one way or the other could ruptre and cause great hemmoraghing.

Even if there is a shake-up at the top, there will not be a mass exodus as most JWs would view it as a test from Satan. The ones that remain would be the "true JWs". Because after all, you just have to wait on Jehovah

They now have kids activities in the mags? Youngins can color and the next page has bible cards you cut out and collect?! I remember a time when the mags were considered sacred and you never threw them out and would not even think of cutting them for pics.

Apollo, I have relatives just like your aunt. It's a guilt trip. You're an adult and have the right to decide which religion you want to participate in. Keep in mind that it can be difficult for people that saw you grow up to now see you as an adult. Don't feel like you have to explain yourself to any them.
I would recommend not avoiding their phone calls. You are letting them control your behavior, albeit unintentionally. You don't have to hold a 3 hour conversation with them. You can end the conversation whenever you want. The thing about being raised a JW is that it takes a while to understand your rights as an adult.
Regarding them making up a card to DF you...they are not suppose to do that but it doesn't mean they wouldn't. But I think you are fine for a while.
Life's a journey and I wish you a successful one,
Shop.

Wow, haven't been to a meeting in a while. Made it through about 15 min before fast forwarding to the announcement. I wouldn't be surprised if next year the JWs were instructed to download the study articles themselves.
I hope they include a page in each mag about new articles you can find online. Maybe they will even have that barcode thing for smartphone users...now that would be a hoot!

The annointed remnant figure rising - a question
by jambon1 inhaving been out of the loop for a while on here, it dawned on me that the figure of memorial partakers has risen substantially from when i was a jw.. i think i bowed out at around 8500 in 2006.. can anyone briefly explain what the main reasons for this increase are and if it is ever discussed among jw's because if i remember correctly, the figure should be going down, not up.. thanks.. j.

They are also including recent converts who partake out of habit because they get hit with feelings at the memorial...or at least that's how several people explained it. Nothing about mental people although the mag includes them in the higher count.

It's happening throughout the States too but not everyone from the selected congregations are invited. Only folks with so many years of service...at least from what I heard. You need a ticket to get in the meeting.
