Bachelor Weekend!
by RollerDave inlooks like i'll be having a bachelor weekend as my beck is going out of town on a 'consolation prize' vacation with her mom.. see, her mom tried inviting herself along on out trip up north to stay in the dome, and we put the kibosh on that!.
but they had to offer her something, so i was beck and her sister rosie taking their mom to wisconsin dells this weekend.. i got my truck, my scooter is fixed, i'm at my lowest weight since starting my diet and feel great (except for a bit of a cold), the upside is i can do anything i want!.
the downside: no beck.. i think friday night i'll go to the best asian resteraunt in the known universe in no.

Life is sweet
by RollerDave ingot my truck back.. it was best-case, in the neighborhood of $2000, rather than the worst-case of $3000 or catastrophic-case $6000.. head gaskets.. bad, i know, but it could have been cracked heads, or worse.. i paid my peasly little two grand and that aposta-truck roared to life!
it's gleaming smugly outside my garage right now.. life is sweet, i got my truck back.. helped my daughter build a 'model' for her piano technician classes, a board with hitch pins on one end, and tuning pins on the other, a bridge in between (with bridge pins) and a string.. basically a model of a set of three piano strings for one note in a simulation of the stuff that mounts it in a real piano.. i love woodworking, and i love making things.
i love making things well.

Of pianos and possibilities.
by RollerDave ina piano is a funny thing.. it sits in the corner, seeming to be solid, hulking, static; but it is not.. somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty tons of pressure are contained in each one, strings stretched tights by the plate, pressing down on a bridge across a soundboard; if the pressure of just a few strings were suddenly released the imbalance could fracture the huge cast iron plate in a catastrophic fashion reminiscent of a grenade.. yet, we let our children play them, bang on them, watch tv right next to them, it is a testament both to how well they are made and how little most of us truly understand about them.. when you press a key, it actuates an incredibly precise sequence that strikes a string or strings with a felt hammer just so yet it uses woof, felt, buckskin and other materials you might not associate with precision.. that old piano in the corner lives and breathes after a fashion.
the lightest change in humidity and all of its wooden bit start subtly shifting, moving, altering its pitch and regulation, yet for the desired tone, you can't use anything but wood.. this means a properly cared for piano requires service a minimum of twice yearly, and this requires a registered piano technician.. my daughter has been taking classes to be a piano technician, and what she has been bringing home has been fascinating!.
this girl is 19 and knows what she wants to do, and is on fire for this field.. she is the 'possibility' part of my post title, as she is all possibility at this time.. when she turned 18, we got her auxiliary cards on all our credit accounts, and she already had a job at target, she paid her bills, worked hard, and got offers of her own.. now she is in school and had paid in full be credit card for her courses, and got a deal through amex that gives her a better interest rate than student loans.. her school had a couple pianos, she had another card, she charged 'em.

Roller's gotta ROLL!
by RollerDave inoh, i was pissed off beyond words.. i am leaving, though it looked like i might not for a bit.. we got a big trip planned to the north shore of lake superior where we have rented a geodesic dome cabin, and i was getting the aposta-truck checked and serviced for the long long drive.
i got the platform on the back, built my steel folding ramp, sweet setup so i can take my scoot and have a modicum of freedom and self respect.. all is good until they start the oil change.. i had extensive diagnostic work done at a garage i had trusted and they had said my cooling system was not losing pressure, they took like two days to do these tests.
i figures it must be the radiator cap or the overflow that was doing it.. the oil change guys, who were not the one's who did my diagnostics, found my oil to be like a milkshake!

Visit from my mom, oh the joy.
by RollerDave ini realize it's been a while since i spun a good yarn, but the past few days i have had my mom staying with us, and that is enough to fuel a yarn if anything ever was.. it starts last week when my sister, mrs po was over at mom's trying to discover why mom's pc seems to randomly shut itself off for no apparent reason.
i imagine she scoured the house for garage sale items with attached legions of demons or mischievous smurf dolls before noticing a correlation between the ancient prehistoric freezer mom has switching on or off, and the lights dimming and the pc simply going poof.. but it couldn't be this pleistocene menace freezer that is the problems, it has to be the top-end pc i built mom.. please excuse me while i roll my eyes and peer at the back of my skull for a moment or two..... there.. anyhoo, it gets decided that i'll come out and pick mom up along with her pc and bring the both of them back to my house for a few days.. not decided by me mind you, but decided nonetheless.. i mean, i've got a giant truck that chugs gas as if from a fire hose and an electric scooter to ride up to mom's door, why shouldn't i go collect her, haul all her stuff to the truck, load it, help her climb up into the truck and then load my scooter?.
all from the back of my scooter, mind you.

Jason P of St Paul Mn, are you out there?
by RollerDave inonce i had a friend.. i met him at an auto show, he was taking pictures of a tv screen that was showing classic mopars.. the very next week i bumped into him at an assembly at the aldrich arena and became fast friends with him.. he was a constant companion and true.
a regular fixture around our home in spite of my wife's intestinal dislike for the fellow.
he stayed with us off and on, we attended the same auto-body training program, shared beers, laughs, rock n roll music, and good times.. then i changed.. i can't say i am proud of who i was or how i behaved, i can't offer any excuse other than i wasn't in my right mind.. he was the best friend i had and i threw him away.. i was so petty, so smugly (and falsely) superior.

Hectic July
by RollerDave inwell, it has been a bit since i poked my head up here.. been hopping making the aposta-cruiser ready for her trials, i think today is the day.. had to do all sorts of piddly stuff including flush the fuel system after removing three year old gas that resembled egg yolks.
worked on it with my daughter's boyfriend.
let's call him frodo.. frodo is a hell of a good helper.
