My opinion, if you don't share your life with your family then you might as well be shunned. I would have a heart-to-heart talk with the boyfriend and his family about what it means to be a faded Jehovah's Witness, then I would approach my family and present my significant other that I claim I'm not having sex with and I'm contemplating getting married too.
His family would be forewarned to help you approach this delicately.

nowadays i'm a pimo in my late 20s from spain.. i was born in the cult and i can say that during my whole childhood and most of my teenage years i believed in this.
however, i felt that here was something wrong with me, as i wasn't comfortable telling people i was jw, talking about jw stuff, nor did i feel "excited" and "grateful" whenever a watchtower publication told me that i should.

i was sitting at the kingdom hall thinking about all the rules, procedures, policies, teachings that each member must follow ......or else!.
at the watchtower study we are reminded of the paradise earth where we will all be the same and happy.
"Pick up your torture stake and follow me!" ...or something like that. Why should you expect joy? They tell you the joy is knowing the special truth and pleasing your God (Watchtower).
It is double talk because they say you should be joyful or else you are doing something wrong.

To be fair to the opening post, if people used to believe in "a vague, nebulous notion of some - hopefully benevolent - supernatural being" or used to believe in "an imminent god who answers prayers, observes everything that happens, cares about who we sleep with and how we do it and who is going to punish those who don't return his 'love' " ...then the question is "Do you still believe in such?"

Personally, I believe that Daniel was written much later than it claims and much of the "dream" was already fulfilled. Like everything else in the Bible, theories abound.
The first four kingdoms have been identified as the Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman Empires. Daniel already said that Babylon, specifically Nebuchadnezzar, was the head of gold. Babylon fell to the kingdom of the Medes and the Persians. Greece became the successor to the Medo-Persian Empire. The “iron” empire can only be Rome.
Opinions differ on the fifth empire. Some have tried to identify various periods in Europe’s history as the clay-and-iron feet; others claim the feet represent the divided remnants of Rome before supposedly being “conquered” by Christianity. Still others believe that the clay/iron empire is yet to come: the kingdom of the Antichrist will be a “revived Roman Empire.”
