My brother did the party scene in the late 50's early 60's, they had fun.
About 1972-73 was the start for me. Lots of weddings I remember, and it was open to everyone back then. I had a different group mid to late 70's, not too wild, but lots of dancing and camping and fun.

More fear and paranoia WT-style! (11/15/13 WT)
by LostGeneration ini usually dismiss the "drinking the kool aid" scenarios that are posted from time to time, but the latest wt has another bit of fearmongering.
the quote from page 20, para 17. elders who are reading this article can draw some useful conclusions from the account we have just considered: (1) the most practical step that we can take to prepare for the coming attack of the assyrian is that of strengthening our faith in god and helping our brothers to do the same.
(2) when the assyrian attacks, the elders must be absolutely convinced that jehovah will deliver us.

I think it's to keep people from leaving. They have always scared people into thinking if they disobey, then they are birdfood.
Remember when they said you can't miss a meeting because during "the persecution" (TM) you will only learn where the next meeting is from the previous meeting. And if you go to the wrong place, bad things happen...prison and death I believe were the consequences. Losing your life because you didn't obey...that's what it's all about.
Sad.

Fading ... Do You Owe Witness Friends An Explanation?
by What Now? ini'm curious about what you all think on this subject.
when my husband and i became irregular about a year ago, and then inactive around 5 months ago, i felt that it would be hypocritical to take advantage of the social side of the witness community if we weren`t going to meetings or in service.
we stopped entertaining (which we did quite regularly - theme parties, card parties, movie nights, big turkey dinners, breakfasts on holidays etc), and i slowly stopped accepting invitations for get togethers, playdates etc.

So the punishing begins. It's all about punishing with JW's...quite like the god they worship.
You have the plague now, and it's highly contagious...so they must warn others to stay away.
There may be a few friends who sincerely want to know and help if they can. But they will be required to punish you and the relationship will fade.
I think your response was honest and good. But JW's are not about honesty...it's about appearance of attendance and numbers on a monthly slip...no matter how good of a person you are.
We understand the social cost is quite dear...and the only solution is to get out there and start living. Do things of interest you have always wanted to do. Take chances, take trips...live fully. It's not easy at first, I still struggle with it "being okay now." Eventually, it will have a fantastic antiJW effect, and the former friends will be secretly envious as the years tick on and they hang on to the false hope of a pet tiger.
Edited to add: No, you don't owe anybody an explanation. You can prepare several answers depending on who is asking. I told everybody I was on sabbatical. Maybe one or two I added something a bit more, like "I've taken it to Jah in prayer." You just cannot be honest about anything if you are not in good standing at the hall....it can and will be used against you, and you will be talked about. You can say the same thing if you are a seat warmer, and it will be just fine. Good luck.

Gettin in hours...not productive in the least. No effort to actually make human contact for their "ministry." This drives me nuts.
Oh, and the "rural" territory. Hours spent in the car going for lunch...and they feel soooo good about their day in service. Actual contact may be less than a person who has a productive 5 hours a month, yet the low number is judged and the high number glorified.
One of my buttons.
