tales of bad gifts...
by detective insince it's the season for gift-giving (or not), i figured i open up a thread about really bad gifts people have received over the years.. here's a story that comes to mind:.
i had suffered the loss of a substantial, lengthy relationship not too long before christmas, a fact a longtime friend knew well.
i was still reeling from the experience and quite deeply saddened.

Strange comment after shooting
by detective ini was listening to the news this morning and they were reporting on a double shooting that had just happened at a pharmacy.
details about the shooting weren't available as it had just happened but the reporter detailed what he was witnessing as the emts removed two badly wounded victims from the pharmacy.. about ten minutes later he came back on the radio and gave an update, including comments from a pharmacy employee who was due in at nine am (the shooting must have taken place around 8:30 or so).. .
reporter: did you find what happened here surprising?.

Soooo not out! Talking to an ex-jw...
by detective inwell, i damn near put my foot in it this evening.
a friend of mine who is well aware of my continuing friendship with a jw (now allegedly ex-jw) told me i should meet an ex-jw that he knows.
i felt pretty excited about meeting an ex-jw face to face as i've longed for a chance to speak honestly with someone who knows the organization well and my friend isn't ready to really discuss the issues yet.

that means that i can't link to the article online so that people here can get a look at it.
i've got a hard copy but it doesn't seem likely that i'll be able to scan it.. if i have time, i'll try to put some highlights out there for you folks to consider.. here's the lead-in paragraphs:.

The friends, the truth and loaded language
by detective inas many people already know, using the term "the truth" to describe an organization's teachings is a brilliant way to constantly reaffirm it's validity subconsciously.
it's a great use of repetition to establish as fact that which is only opinion.. i keep hearing the phrase "the friends".
aside from the fact that i really don't like the terminology, i couldn't help but wonder if this isn't just another use of repetition and loaded language to enforce the belief that all of the people who share the same religion actually are your friends.. in some ways, i think it would be beneficial for some folks to drop "the truth" and "the friends" from their vocabulary so that they aren't continuing to immerse themselves in group-lingo that's intended to elicit certain emotional responses and associations.. what other loaded language can you come up with that is quasi-specific to jehovah's witnesses?

Df'd notifying elders of no return?
by detective inquestion: my friend who is df'd wishes to tell the elders that he won't be applying for re-instatement.
my friend only recently decided he doesn't want back in and isn't really "out" emotionally yet.
do elders really pay attention to df'd ones disappearing?
