Overheard at the Book Study
by under_believer inhere are a few comments that i overheard at this week's book study (of the third chapter of the bible teach book), and the thoughts i had after hearing them: .
conductor: "as food shortages become more and more common as the time of the end advances, they will make excellent field service points since they were predicted by the bible.
me: great.

1999 new light on voting?
by under_believer inso it was just brought to my attention that the nov 1, 1999 watchtower, while still strongly discouraging voting, says:.
*** w99 11/1 p. 28 questions from readers ***.
as to whether they will personally vote for someone running in an election, each one of jehovahs witnesses makes a decision based on his bible-trained conscience and an understanding of his responsibility to god and to the state.

New Study: People With Hard Lives Are More Gullible. Applies to JW's?
by under_believer ina new study (available here) run at the university of leicester seems to indicate that people who have lived hard lives, been knocked around, or otherwise had things go south on them are more likely to be gullible and easily misled or even brainwashed.
you should read the entire article, because it's full of things i can identify with as a jw.
so what kind of people are typically affected?

I don't believe in Bible chronology. I believe in love.
by under_believer ini think so-called "bible chronology" is ridiculous.
i think that the concept that god left all these hidden messages that require all kinds of mathematics, symbolic time periods, coded references, antitypicals, classes of people, lesser and greater fulfillments, and so forth, really stretches credibility.. why would god do that?
why would he make it so complicated and confusing to serve him in true worship?

Things JW's Say: "Yes I'm Brainwashed... And Proud Of It!"
by under_believer inthat last post about the "college education" was so successful i decided to post another.
has anybody ever heard witnesse say the above?
they'll say that, and then they'll follow up with "my brain is washed of evil thoughts, immoral sexual impulses, independent, goatlike thinking, demonism, etc..." this is something i have heard in conversation, comments at the meeting, and from the platform in the congregation, though never at a higher level than that.

Reading WT & Awake for X years = College Education
by under_believer inhas anybody ever heard any witnesses utter that old saying "reading the magazines for 10 years [or whatever] is equivalent to getting a college education?
" a couple of things are amusing about this.
one is its utter and complete falsehood--what a crock!

Oldest living Holocaust survivor is a JW
by under_believer inhttp://www.portervillerecorder.com/articles/2006/05/16/news/local_state/news08.txt .
what it doesn't talk about is how rutherford tried to conciliate with the nazis in the 30's, failed, and then deliberately ordered the witnesses there into a position that would put them in harm's way, when there were other things they could have done that would have preserved their "christian conscience" and not gotten thousands of them killed.
i wonder if that poor old brave guy had known that, whether he would still be a witness?

Morally Bankrupt Blood Policy
by under_believer inin my usual didactic fashion, let's go through the logical steps here.. 1. the society allows witnesses to use many blood fractions: albumin for burn victims is an example.
these medical supplies come from the donated blood supply.. 2. the society forbids witnesses to donate blood.. 3. therefore, individual witnesses who accept treatment from the blood supply are hypocrites.. this is really a horrible situation.
i'm sure they felt up at brooklyn that they were becoming more liberal in relaxing the blood ban; in fact, they created a situation where any witness that accepts any of the arbitrarily allowed blood fractions is taking part in a horrible hypocrisy.

How To Make Espresso--By The Faithful And Discreet Slave
by under_believer in1. go to http://www.watchtower.org/library/g/1997/11/8/diagram_01.htm.
2. read instructions.
as they wisely point out at the related page, http://www.watchtower.org/library/g/1997/11/8/article_01.htm: "your perseverance, however, will pay off when you delight your friends with espresso drinks that rival those in your local coffee shop.

It's not upbuilding! It only tears down!
by under_believer ini'm sure many will recognize the subject as a criticism frequently levelled against critical or "apostate" statements: it doesn't build up, it's not encouraging, it only tears down, it's negative.
in other words, don't listen to it, or it will harsh your mellow.. has anybody come up with a reasonably acceptable response to this criticism?
i have already heard it a couple of times in talking to various friends of mine.
