I would love to have a scan of that letter...
Seconded.
it is a known fact that on average a pedophile will abuse as many as 200 children in his/her lifetime.. with that in mind.
read an extract from an august 1, 1995 letter to all bodies of elders in the usa.. i guess these untrained elders are somehow experts in this area and can determine if someone will reoffend even though law enforcement, psychiatrists and specialists cannot offer the same guarantee and in many cases will even suggest that these known sex offenders are very likely to reoffend when the opportunity presents itself.... to all bodies of elders in the united states.

let's say it was revealed via the media and scientific community that a planet wide catastrophe such as a large comet or asteroid impact or even a brush with a large planetary body or black hole was emminant and that it was certain to devistate the planet in say 18 months.
how would you spend the remaining time?
if the event was considered possibly survivable by maybe a few million what action, if any would you take?
Personally, I would like to travel. I'd like to see Scotland and Ireland. Also, Germany (maybe even the military hospital where I was born). I'd probably watch all my favorite movies and shows one last time. Also I'd really, really like to get laid. I would hate to die without having tried it at least once.
The Witlesses, of course would believe that somehow they, and only they would be the lucky few million and that this was Armageddon™
just wondering if anyone has a pdf of the most recent "elder's manual" i have a pdf of the '91 version, but i'm sure there's been plenty of new lighttm since then..
Thanks. Just thumbing through it. This was interesting under DFing offenses:
"Celebrating false religious holidays: (Ex. 32:4-6; Jer. 7:16-19) Not all holidays directly involve false religion and require judicial action."
Never heard that before. I thought all holidays were equally bad.
And later:
"The elders do well not to involve themselves in what individual do with regard to petty gambling solely for entertainment."
You mean, a "poker night with the boys" might be okay?
Interesting. I'll have to look in more detail later.
i read this today on the board and want to ask, is the statement true?.
all religious belief distills down to faith in utterly unprovable stories.
i feel this way sometimes.
Would not that be the very definition of "faith"? Keep in mind that these "stories" can't be DISPROVEN either.
As I mentioned in another topic, I am pagan, and personally believe the "gods" may be highly evolved aliens. Can't be proven, can't be disproven.
As for any holy books or religious works (even the Edda of my own beliefs), they must be taken with a grain (or more) of salt. Ultimately they were all written by men and subject to error and personal bias.
I suggest you read "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. Of course, he is what you might call an "evangelical athiest", so keep that salt handy. Pay particular attention to "the invisible teapot" illustration, which kind of highlights the can't be proven/disproven thing.

i've noticed allot of attention given to that scripture of late , i've also noticed the wtbts flip flops in dogma , to me it's an obvious contradiction in scripture and was tampered with or an out right forgery .
praising the romans for using the sword for good is completely outrageous .
from what i see in the bible is gods hatred of world rulers and not empowering them .
Well of course, the official Witness dogma, as far as I know, is that the governments are ultimately Satan's but god permits them so as to keep order in society (since, of course, it would be hard to preach with total anarchy).
What The Bible™ says varies depending on who you talk to.
Personally, I think (the) God(s) have nothing to do with with human government whatsoever. Humans are quite capable of screwing things up on their own without supernatural (or alien) intervention, and I'm sure (the) God(s) have other, more important, things to do with their time.
last saturday morning, i ran to the hardware store.
a former co (retired in a circuit provided house) was in the hardware store.
i stopped at starbucks....more jw's.
Yep. The "breaks" can sometimes make most of the morning. The Special Pioneer™ and several others in our hall often do a good bit of their grocery shopping when we "break" at one of the grocery stores in town. I'm often with people who have "calls" that can last upwards of an hour (mostly shooting the shit, with a little study thrown in). Meantime, those left in the car pull out the cell phones and start playing bubble breaker or some such. I'm getting quite good at Bejeweled.
news 88 new york reported this morning somebody named larry mckelvey, did not stand for national anthem; 3 guys tried to rough him up and he blasted them with stun gun at sunday's jets-cowboys game.
.
LOL. What happened to "turn the other cheek"?
i had to complete some mandatory training today for my job on child protection.
one of the types of abuse described was "making a child feel responsible for the abuser's happiness/unhappiness.. then i thought of this:.

With the economy in shit, not all of us can afford that option, Bella. Believe me, I'm 30, and I wish I could afford my own place.
for those on who are still in.. what is the official position of the wathchtower with regards to this movie?
the reason i ask is that i went out with some jw family to the movies recently and just for kicks i suggested we go watch the smurfs just to see how they would react.
everyone was very resoundingly against going to watch it.
I believe the WTB$ position would be: Smurfs have magic. Magic bad.
