Gary, what was the alternative service change in 1996?
Please excuse my ignorance as I am new here and I have been away from 'them' since 1985.

for those of you not "keeping up with the organization"botchtower deals soley with all the bullshit instances of "increased light" on this joke of a religion god's organization.
it asks many drone-like thought-provoking questions as i've listed below.
incredible that these guys claim to be the sole ownership of what is absolute "truth", yet change doctrines like i change lipsticks.

Looking for a site like this one, but for ex-scientologist.
are there jws who prepare for the tribulations they assume are around the corner?
when i visted the us once in 1999 i met a few guys who were expecting a global meltdown due to the millenium bug.. as a consequence they had generators, guns, ammo, tins of food, bottled water, fuel, all kinds of stuff to help them through a civil disorder situation.
does anyone know or remember any jws who have prepared like this?
I like how you write, Merry.
.
all i know is that jesus said to get baptized.
he didn't say in what religion though.. although i don't go to meetings anymore and don't plan on going anymore, i'm still glad that i was baptized.
jafacake: they took the words 'holy spirit' out of the baptismal discourse? Truly?

I was baptized at 13 years of age. They seemed to think I was old enough for that monumental event but I wasn't old enough/mature enough to do anything else. So, this 'thing' I did ruined the rest of my life, because when I was finally mature enough to think for myself, I was DF'd for doing so!
i thought i would share this with you as i am still a little bit stunned to say the least.
my mother who is a longstanding jw came to stay over the christmas period as my uncle had past away and she wanted to be more local to the family, that way she could attend the funeral and provide some support to her remaining brothers and sisters.
she lives a considerable distance away from me at this moment in time.
Wowwweee Zoweeee...........and much APLAUSE!!!!
i have a friend who backed out of scientology way back when hubbard was still alive.
we go to lunch together quite often here at work.
we have often commented about the great similarity & difficulty between breaking away from wt and from the scientologists.
James.............if you are out there.........wondering if you would be interested in communitcating personally with me. I have some Scientology questions, searching for info, maybe you know.???

i was df'd in 1985 and have not been back since.
of course disowned by my family.
at that time they rarely called or came over because i had small children and they called just enough to semi maintain a relationship with them.
Acutally, my mother has been the JW all my life. My father was never interested. He was the breadwinner, mom was the spiritual head. But, once I was DF'd, my father just sort of stopped calling and seeing me because that's what mom did. (sick, huh?) So now, dad is retired, bored or whatever and he decides he has SEEN THE LIGHT and is going to be a witness. HE called me on the phone one night to invite me to his BAPTISM!!!!!!!! He used the words, that it was an 'important occasion' and he wanted me to be there. NEVER have I stood up to or talked back to my father. I couldn't help it this time! I said, 'This is important to you? What about what was important to (I named various things that were important to my children and myself)............' I ended by saying that I couldn't carry on this conversation because it was making me ill. I hung up. He hasn't called again.
yup, the one thing i miss about assemblies.
the chase.
sneaking off at lunch and/or half the afternoon session to make out w/ someone you just met.
Couldn't wait until I was old enough (12 years old probably) to be a volunteer for food service at the assemblies! That way, I was able to miss part of the sessions to prepare food in the cafeteria or stands. And, that was the age when we started noticing the opposite sex and boy oh boy it was a thrill just to make eye contact!!!
