My First Witness to a Witness
by Cold Creek Swimmer inso, i don't start many topics here, but i felt this needed to be shared.
i had just landed at the airport and was walking out of the concourse when i noticed a stand that had been set up by an obviously married older witness couple.
they were very patiently waiting behind their counter covered with the latest publications.

Can the WTBTS change 1914 and survive?
by jefferywhat inthe society has changed equally as big doctrines in the past, but could this end the illusion?
i have read a lot of leolaia posts and have seen the attempt of scholar to counteract however unconvincingly.
im not after conspiracy, im after fact, could they move the end of the gentile times to 1934/35?

All the WTS has to do is say "world events since 1914 prove we are in the time of the end (world wars, Spanish flu, food shortages, yada yada yada). Providentially, we thought Jerusalem was destroyed in 607 which led to our calculation of 1914. Well, 607 is wrong, but 1914 still stands. Jehovah allowed us to use the wrong method to get the right result. Providentially, of course."
I don't know that this would work. The Society always gives reasons (crappy ones but to the JW they are enough to keep them from asking questions). I think they could change 1914 and survive. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they did the generation change -- to prepare people for changing the date to the 1930 something date. They want to believe it so badly that they will accept anything. Besides -- It's "new light". It would then get everyone speculating that the end will come before 2030 when the 1930 people died off.

Guys: How do you show your interest?
by serendipity inguys, when you are trying to woo a woman, in the early days before you get physically intimate, how do you show your interest in her?

What's funny is that it takes all of that (compliments/emails/calls/gifts/flowers/dinner) to show a girl a guy is interested. If I wiggle my nose the wrong way a guy thinks I'm interested. (At least when I was single.)
And once when I was trying to show a guy friend I was interested this is how I did it -- I brought up the sex subject. In no time he was melting and after me like a tomcat after a feline in heat.

Is there a problem............
by Sunnygal41 inwith taking each of my parent's last names and using them?
aren't they already "legally" mine to use, without having to pay money for them?
i know that i have to register the change with ss,.dmv, my bank, my employer, etc, but, other than that, there shouldn't be a problem.. terri.

I dropped my middle name and took my maiden name as my middle name at the Social Security office. When I went to change my driver's license, I didn't notice that they dropped my maiden name and gave me the married name. Now my SS card and my DL have different names! Can I easily get that fixed when I get my DL renewed? -- MS, USA

My only problem with the JWs
by dawg inbesides the fact that jws are pious, think only they have the truth, won't read anything with an open mind... hell won't read anything at all minus wt magazines... .
after all this, my only real problem is the shunning... almost everyone i love gets on my nerves from time to time, i get on theirs.
the fact that the jws beliefs is annoying isn't the problem, it just that after they are wrong as hell becasue of their ignorance, they won't talk to you.. i'm not trying to get my family to eradicate their beliefs, i'm just trying to get them to stop shunning those of us that don't believe like them.

I could deal with it if they would talk to me AND respect my beliefs. There are plenty of people who will share with you what they believe and can have a discussion about why. I wish the JWs could do the same.

The really important developments are buried in the Watchtower magazines
This is true -- Nothing important is ever announced.

Which church?
by faundy ini don't feel comfortable living as an atheist.
i believe the world is far to complex and humans are too incredible to have just occurred.
therefore, if i was to attend a church, which one should i consider?

There's a good many of us who have found what they were looking for in the Calvanist churches (Reformed Baptist or Presbyterian). A great book to read about it that's pretty simple is: "Chosen by God" by R.C. Sproul.

Know anyone who was zealous for field service but missed many meetings?
by truthseeker ini know this one brother who misses loads of meetings, yet when he talks, he sounds very zealous about preaching and finding interested ones.. i can't quite wrap my mind over this - how can you be zealous for service yet hardly turn up at the hall?.

I remember this very zealous nurse. She was a hippie in the 60s and still probably wears those kind of clothes to this day. She was a very nice person and everyone loved her. She would talk about how she talked to people at work and was always bringing people with her to the KH. She never once went out into field service (I never asked why) and because of that the brothers never let her get baptized. I found it funny that she had more "success" and brought more people into the "truth" than the pioneers and never once went out in field service.
Her meeting attendance was slim pickings too. She came about twice a month. The reason she gave was that she was 45 minutes from the hall and going at night with her schedule was nearly impossible. They never understood and gave her examples of people who tracked through swamps to come to the meetings.
I wonder where she is today.

Question about maternity leave
by katiekitten inis it true that in america there is no paid maternity leave?.
if so surely that means most people have to return to work pretty quick after they have had a baby?
if thats true, then surely that means its not possible to breast feed your baby exclusively for any time at all?

I have to pay a disability insurance company to get any paid maternity leave. I have 6 weeks to take off and not worry about being fired. I would get 66% of my pay for just that 6 weeks.
I have 10 days vacation time per year at my job assuming I didn't have to take any time prior to that for doctor's visits. (I have 5 sick days too) I wouldn't get any pay if I didn't sign up for disability insurance that costs me $10 a month and is tax free.
